National Poll Shows Support for Wisconsin Governor

Published: Friday, 11 Mar 2011 | 5:57 PM ET Text Size

TAMPA, Fla., March 11, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The Free Enterprise Nation (FEN) today released the results of a national poll that shows strong support for Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker among Independent voters. The poll of voters outside of Wisconsin, taken from March 3rd to March 9th, included 500 Democrat, 500 Republican and 500 Independent voters.

FEN spokesman, Jim MacDougald stated that "This poll contradicts some of the other polls we've seen. According to our poll, 95% of Republicans agree with the Governor, and 92% of Democrats agree with the union. There is not much of a surprise there. But 66% of Independent voters agree with the Governor, and this group is what swings most elections." The support for the Governor's position was even stronger when the question specifically addressed his plan to require teachers to pay 5.8% of their salary toward their pension and 12.6% of their health insurance costs, with 71% of all respondents saying that measure was fair.

When asked if it is good public policy to allow public sector workers to retire at age 55 or earlier, 61% of all voters said "no", and they were evenly divided when asked if public sector employees should be allowed to unionize with 48% against, 48% for, and 4% undecided.

Full poll results are available at http://www.thefreeenterprisenation.org/sp/poll-results/wisconsin-survey.aspx The Free Enterprise Nation is a non-partisan member based organization representing American employees and businesses in the private sector. Its President, James MacDougald is author of the best-selling title, "UNSUSTAINABLE: How Big Government, Taxes and Debt are Wrecking America." Mr. MacDougald is a regular guest on many national news networks including CNBC, FOX News, CNN and MSNBC and was recently prominently featured in the John Stossel special, "The Battle for the Future."

I am shocked that number isn't a lot higher.

I am extremely supportive of the right to unionize and collectively bargain but even I don't think a retirement age of 55 is appropriate for all workers. In fact, I believe certain types of workers should be eligible to retire at 55 - workers who's work takes a toll on their bodies. Miners, for example.

In fact, I'd be for letting them claim social security retirement at 55 too. But all public sector workers? That includes a lot of cube people like me and it's just not necessary. Cube people can (barring disability) go on well into their mid 60s (and for some very healthy ones, well beyond).

Way to raise the bar. Try 80 before you see a penny of that money.

Oh please ...

I'd say non-partisan in the way the KKK were non-partisan.

Gallup and USA Today issued a new poll yesterday which found broad public disapproval of the idea of stripping public unions of their collective bargaining rights.

According to the survey, 61 percent of adults across the country oppose Walker plan to strip public workers of their rights (maybe people are stuck on that word—“rights,” as in something that can’t be taken away by fiat).

Drilling down a bit, not only do Democrats oppose the idea overwhelmingly (18 percent in favor, 78 percent oppose), but independents line up against the idea by a 2-to-1 margin (31-62). Only Republicans like it, and that by a relatively close margin (54-41).

No way! He has balls, and therefore, can't get nominated.

There's also the rumor going around that he was born in Egypt. He's would have to scan his birth certificate online. The Colorado one, not the Egyptian one.

Has anyone among our right wing friends here looked at how this poll was established, who FEN actually is and why this poll (unsurprisingly to those that have answered yes to the previous questions) is so out of line with any poll on the matter out there?

ALL of them have one thing in common. They are meaningless. The real poll on this will be taken at the ballot box in 2014. By then we will know if what the Repubs did was a good thing or not.

For now, we only know that when the state was in a crisis, the Dems ran out of the state.

Odd. I seem to recall you posting the exact opposite celebrating the gridlock in DC since it meant that nothing is getting is done which you believed is better than getting something done. Times are changing, I suppose.
