Well I learnt something new this week. I've been trying to get a tax refund since last october for the past 3 years I have worked on an emergency tax code. No action has been taken and the silly eejits keep sending me more employment history forms of which I have now filled out 4 I believe  . Anyhow I made an appointment at inland revenue yesterday and went to see what the heck was going on. They told me I had to fill out a tax form to say I was leaving the uk so that I would get a tax break.

Did anyone else fill out this form? It was certainly a new thing to my ears and we supposedly are by law supposed to do this if you are living outside of the uk.

I don’t know how accurate this is but I was told by a former colleague back home around February/March that a P85 should be sent back before the tax year ending 2006 or they could be problems or delays with my refund for the past year. I believe the deadline they gave me was around mid May. I’m not too sure what happens after this “deadline” or if the deadline is related to returning the P85 or to other Inland Revenue documents/fillings. I was also informed that I could only be refunded my tax paid for the previous year. :hehe:

I don’t know how things might or could work for yourself with being on an emergency tax code for 3 years? 3 years is a very long time not to have a proper tax code assigned; was there a reason why your employer/employers couldn’t/didn’t assign a tax code? If you where on an emergency tax code that long there’s every chance you’ve paid too much/too little tax during that period of time. I’m not an expert on tax matters so I could well be wrong here.

I returned my P85 (before the deadline) while I was here in the US.. approx 6 weeks later (If I remember correctly) I had a cheque in the mail, which Bank of America happily converted to dollars and put into my account! :D

Good Luck!
