Hi guys,

i was issued a SSN number in 2007 when i was here on a J1 visa.

From what i know, if i was once issued a SSN i`ll have it forever even if i haven`t been in US since 2007 so all i need to do is go to their office after marriage with the marriage certificate and change the name.

Just wanted to check with you guys if i have the right info or not.

Thank you

Correct - the SSN is yours for life.

They may want to see immigration papers (current status).

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Yes - I have seen cases where the SSA wouldn't touch the SSN till you have some sort of status. (or within 2 weeks of the I-94 expiring).

However, since you all ready have an SSN - your experience may vary.

I just had the name on my SS card changed. Any change will require proof of legal presence in the US and documentation pertaining to the name change. In your case that will be the passport with the K-1 and the I-94, assuming it's still valid for more than 14 days, as well as your marriage certificate. Still be prepared to encounter the dumbest of the dumb the human species has to offer, as they all work at the SSA. Print this out and take it with you:

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Thank you so much!

Oh, maaaaan!...was hoping that at least the SSN would be easyer to get !

I was hoping for a little break after the endless struggle with the civil surgeons ( solved that one eventually).
