There is another way to cover both sides. You can buy e-book and ask their expert to review your petition for your peace of mind (the expert is not lawyer but consultant). The cost is a fraction of price of hefty lawyer's fee. That's what we did with our petition. So far it is working well.

My husband and I were debating on filing our I130 whether to get a lawyer or not. I found this site and read all the guidelines and decided to just do it ourselves.

We just got our petition approved and NO RFE. We just simply follow the guidelines. I'm glad we did it without a lawyer's help since I've read a lot of bad experiences dealing with them in the forum, hiring one is also expensive.

Goodluck in your journey!

Definitely no lawyer. We hired a lawyer in the beginning of our journey, before we found out about VJ. You'll find all your answers here. VJ members are really helpful! Our lawyer (who seemed knowledgeable and trustworthy) turned out to be a total disaster - now we stress not only because of the whole process, but also because of our lawyer who caused more confusion and stress! Please check my two posts and see how major mistakes she made!

If you end up getting a lawyer anyway, please do the research and make sure you know what you're up against...

Yep. I can't believe some of the things I've read people say their lawyers did or said. VJ is the way to go. I've had two attorneys in my life, not for immigration, and neither of them were worth the money. They do nothing but slow everything down, and do very low quality work. They don't read carefully, write carefully, and can't seem to remember any specifics that are told to them. I think they do this so you will call to harrass them and repeat what you told them last time, then they make even more money.

I was one who did hire a lawyer. The I-129F forms are straightforward and don't require any additional help - there is more than enough information here. What did help was his experience getting everything ready for my fiancee in her country. I tried preparing everything the first time through and explaining something like "birth certificate" to my fiancee was painful. If I was over there, it would have been a lot easier. Once I hired him, I got everything I needed, properly translated, in a single packet. He also was able to get me some inside information about my case once it was at the embassy and I was very happy with the way he prepared my fiancee for the interview. Overall, it was helpful and gave me peace of mind, but the money I paid to hire him was excessive.
