returning to the US after being overseas on military orders

Hi all,

I have a question regarding my upcoming return to the US.

We have been stationed in Germany for the past three years and I have not been back to the US ever since we left in 2008. We are moving back in June and my understanding is that all I need to enter the US are my greencard and the military orders that showed I was out of country "for a reason".

Now I was told though that IF I had to travel by myself, without my husband, I'd need an additional paper.

Does anyone know anything about that or knows the name of said paper so I can google it?

Many thanks in advance.

Also..I have never used my greencard before, not the conditional one which I got only weeks before leaving neither the unconditional card which I got while I was in Germany. Would that be of any issue?

I don't think there is an additional paper to bring with you. If you're on your husband's orders, you're fine - being stationed at a US base overseas counts as being in the US.

Hi, thank you.

I know I shouldn't need a reentry permit or anything like that but I was told that I would have to travel with my husband, otherwise I'd need some additional paperwork. It's pretty sure we will be travelling as a family but in the event he would have to go earlier, I want to be prepared.:)

Hello!

I wonder how this story has ended? Did you need any additional documents?

Also, was it a problem that you stayed outside of the States for more than 1 year without applying for re-entry permit?

Everywhere I read (as it comes to the military) they keep saying about expired green cards and permission to return while being on military orders.

I want to know what happens if I have a valid green card and I just spent 3 years on husband's military orders in Japan and now its time to go back to the States.

I never applied for reentry permission. Will that be an issue?
