Doesn't the US define "life" has an unalienable right?

I suppose the constitution does say a life can be taken through due process.

And that was the entire point of the moratorium signed by then Governor Ryan- a REPUBLICAN, mind you.

Governor Quinn signed this law because he recognized certain imperfections in the system that were sending people to die when perhaps they shouldn't be 'thinned from the herd' for imperfect legal reasons.

I've heard of it. Its the new defense that some people that murder abortion doctors try to use.

I do not believe in such a thing. I do believe in self defense, but as a means of protection without a goal to kill.

if someone is trying to kill you, self defense usually entails killing them first.

The death penalty would hardly fall into this category. Justifiable homicide is the instant result of a direct threat. The death penalty is applied years after a crime has occurred - a different category altogether and very ineffective on top of being a drag on the taxpayer.

I am cool with the death penalty being all about revenge. You kill someone without cause, you will lose your life in return.

That's the general idea. And not the debate, or at least not what I infer from having the death penalty taken away as an option in our state.

Unless you can stop them without causing them permanent harm. That is the ideal solution I would think.

usually when someone is trying to kill you, it's with some form of weapon. i'll take suggestions on how to stop someone like that without causing them permanent harm.
