US Senators seek crackdown on student visa

HOUSTON: Several Democratic senators are urging the federal government to crackdown on criminals and suspected terrorists obtaining valid student visas.

Senators Charles Schumer, Claire McCaskill, Jon Tester, Bill Nelson and Diane Feinstein are taking part in the effort saying some schools are bogus, and are merely fronts for suspected criminals or terrorists once they receive the government-authorised learning visas.

They pointed out some of the men involved in the September 11 attacks arrived in the US on student visas. Five US senators are calling for a federal crackdown on "phony colleges" handing out student visas to potential criminals and terrorists.

The senators also urged the Government Accountability Office to review how visas are doled out to those attending student exchange visitor programmes. The letter cited Department of Homeland Security statistics showing more than 10,000 schools are approved to accept foreign nationals through these programmes.

"Sham universities are not real institutions of higher learning, but rather operate solely for the purpose of manipulating immigration law to admit foreign nationals into the country," the senators stated in the letter released yesterday. "When the student visa programme can be manipulated by bad actors, it threatens the viability of the entire programme for the large majority of bona fide participants.

The senators will ask the federal departments to determine "high-risk factors" within 90 days and conduct site visits at schools that show a high risk factor through data, or the lack of data, that legitimate schools must provide to the federal government. The senators also sought stiffer penalties for "sham universities" that engage in student visa fraud.

"The existing penalties for student visa fraud are simply too low to deter bad actors who can reap large rewards by operating for-profit sham universities and charging foreigners thousands of dollars to come to the US," the senators wrote. "These new penalties will assist you in obtaining justice for the bad actors who compromise the system.

How many 9-11 terrorists got their visas from "sham universities and degree mills"?

Since you're having trouble focusing, let me repeat this for your benefit. Hopefully this time it sinks in.

There is nothing in this proposal that would eliminate student visas.

You are obviously not seeing the justification cited:

They pointed out some of the men involved in the September 11 attacks arrived in the US on student visas.

Based on the logic of the OP, all US high school students are also potentially terrorists based on Columbine. Also all gun enthusiasts are as well based on the likes of McVeigh! Maybe all these people should be rounded up and waterboarded till they give up their nefarious plots and confess to being the terrorists he knows they are!

Thanks for missing the point.
