MY wife and kids came over here in February on a K1 visa. Tried several times to get a ssi card and was told no 5 times, couldn't understand why, I stopped by again after we had marriage certificate was told we need a green card. My question is whats the fastest way to be able to legally work ?

My family doctor is the only Civil surgeon in my area. He's trying to tell me my wife needs a physical, well according to instructions of I-693, if entered on a K1, the civil surgeon needs to translate the immunizations only.. Maybe I'm wrong but he wants her to have a TB test, HIV,and Syphilis test, would been done already in the HCM hospital in Vietnam. He wants to charge me 650 to 1300 dollars per person. Is that reasonable? My private insurance covers all these test but he will not accept it because he considers it the immigration physical. I made an appointment with another doctor to run the test's and the rest of the immunizations.

Is there any self help manuals that can help me get through the Aos? I'm not paperwork savvy nor have alot of time.

Thanks Rich.

You will need to find another civil surgeon then. A regular doctor will not be accepted.

Have you tried using the locator on the USCIS website for civil surgeons? It might find another near your area, may be a bit of a drive but still.

They don't need the full medical just the shots and the vaccination transcription.

Fastest way to work is apply for AOS, EAD and AP.

EAD will let her be able to get the SSN and work before the green card comes.

All guides are in the guide section on VJ - go look up the AOS guide.

I agree to find another Civil Surgeon. They might test you for TB with a small injection on the arm and result is available after 48 hours. Second shot of MMR might be required also.

With regards to SSN card, as long as she still has 14 days left on her I-94, she can get SSN card. Please see my post regarding K-1 visa holder who just married in the USA after arriving in the USA and obtaining SSN card. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/296376-eligibility-to-be-assigned-a-social-security-number/

Sounds like your family doctor needs to be updated with the requirements, since even the K-1 visa medical doesn't require an HIV test anymore. Before trying to locate another, find the requirements on the USCIS website and print them out. No $650-1300 is NOT reasonable.

Your wife will qualify for a SSN, but the kids won't until they either have an EAD or their CGCs. Again, print off the SSA documentation that states this and go in to the SSA and ask for a Supervisor.

How quick can my wife work, she doesn't like sitting around the house. i did talk to a supervisor at our local ssi and they say I need a green card now that we have married. The 4 times I took her before they said they needed a document from Homeland security. I had her I-94.

There are a few Civil surgeon about 90 miles away, I'm afraid my primary doctor who is a civil surgeon will not want to see me if I go to another Civil Surgeon.. He knows I did immigration for my wife and her children. the doctor being an immgrant himself I think is taking advantage of our situation and the many others that went to him.

Is there a different SSA office near your home. You do not need to get a GC to get the SSA Card if it has been more than about 2 weeks since entry but not closer to your I-94 expiration date than about 2 weeks.

We walked in with Passport and marriage certificate. She got a SSN card in her married name in the mail 4-6 days later.

Good luck

She cant work until you file AOS, so either you need to just go to another civil surgeon and get things over with so you can move ahead and help her get the documents so she can work or you can pay full price get a full medical and then apply for AOS. That doctor most likely is trying to take advantage of the situation, most of them do. If he doesn't want to see you anymore thats pretty childish for an adult and for a doctor, specially when all they mostly care about is getting paid! So if that happens then just get a new doctor?

Having an SSN is not going to allow her to work without an EAD or a green card. Both of which must be applied for by sending in her AOS.

Is this guy the only Doctor in town? I wouldn't want someone like that responsible for my or my family's health. He shouldn't be doing HIV tests anymore, it's not required.

Once you submit the AOS paperwork and you complete an EAD form too, they have 90 days to issue the EAD document, unless you get an RFE which resets the clock but rarely adds another 90 days.

Hey Rich,

Try to find another CS that will take care of the vaccination for the I-693. Mine only charged $25 for it, shop around.

Here is the link to put together your AOS, EAD, and AP packages. This link is from Vanessa and it is extremely helpful...

Until the Adjustment of Status is done (or has the EAD Employment Authorization) she will not be legally employable. Even if she had obtained a social security card it would not have been enough to obtain work.

Thanks for the info. I'd like to get the ssi card so i can add her to my bank accounts, 401k, State id, and any other services that might need it. Don't we still have to prove to the government that our relationship is real?

Thanks so much. I found a Cs in the town I work for the children. I will call 2 CS 90 miles west of us. If the fees for the CS is 650-1300 so be it but when I read that there no need for a another physical just a translation of her immunizations to the I-693 then I question this CS.

Did Hang have to receive anymore immunizations prior to your AOS?

Sayha doesn't need another full medical, the one she had at ChoRay is still good. Just get the I-693 signed for vaccination only.

Hang was told at first to need the Varicella shot. I added her to my health insurance, took the blood test and found that she is immuned. Take the lab test back to CS, she signed and sealed the I-693. No additional shots were needed.
