This is not a gag - true story

Flight and dismissal

AP101020120834-300x199.jpg

The picture above is of 21-year-old Marisol Valles Garcia, a criminology major in college, who also serves as chief of police for the city of Guadalupe, Mexico. Garcia took the job as police chief when no one else would for fear of violence or death at the hands of the now-infamous Mexican drug cartels. There was good reason for such fear, as the former mayor of Guadalupe was brutally murdered—he was one of 11 Mexican mayors murdered that year.

Despite all of this, Marisol Garcia stood up for herself and her community, promising to end the violence and to root out the drug cartels, a gesture which was met with instant backlash.

In the past few weeks, Mexican drug cartels have increased their intimidation efforts against Garcia, threatening her life on numerous occasions. She finally decided she needed to do what was best by fleeing the country to seek political asylum in the U.S.. She was subsequently fired from her office as police chief.

Yes, you read that correctly.

A woman who had the strength and courage to decide to lead a police force—which desperately needed to change its methods, intensity, and reputation if it had any chance of restoring order, because no one else would—was fired when she left the force amid threats on her life.

First of all, if the police and others could not protect the mayor of her city, why on Earth should she have any faith in them to protect her life? Secondly, it must be considered Garcia has a young son who needs his mother. Finally, if no one else wanted the job and they fired the only person who did after she made the best decision for herself and her family, who the hell will they find to head up the police department in Guadalupe? At this point, it doesn’t seem worth it.

Let it also be known two other female officials have been killed in retaliation and terror efforts by the drug cartels. One was taken from her home in the middle of the night and never seen again. The other was murdered after one month on the job.

Unfortunately, Ms. Garcia may not be offered political asylum as it is usually granted under the strict conditions of government persecution upon the basis of race, religion, nationality, political views, or belonging to a certain group. We would like to believe the U.S. government is of a much higher caliber than the type which would deny such an urgent request due to a technicality.

This woman needs the support of the international community (as well as her own) in order to carry out the work she started late last year. She does not deserved to be fired or sent back into harm’s way. In this world, everyone loves a hero. Sometimes, even heroes themselves need to be rescued. This seems to be one of those times, and Mexico and the U.S. should heed the call and aid this courageous young lady as she fights for a better future in Mexico.

How many people will have to die before we realize how important this young woman is?

She took the job knowing she will probably die. She cared not one bit about her kid then. Seems that she possible knew that she would flee and be granted asylum so did this for one reason only and that was not to fight the cartels but possibly her own selfish reasons.

That may be true but the fact that she lasted even for one day took major cojones.

I'm sure the immigration authorities will not hesitate to question her motives.

The article paints her in glowing colors but I have no responsibility for that.

I'm sure the immigration authorities will not hesitate to question her motives.

Whenever they get around to look at her petition that is probably sitting in some bathroom closet in a box mingled with toilet tissue.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

There were more than one police chiefs that were female

In the above article the reasoning was that they would shame the men into better behavior,

since no man had stepped forward to take the job so they offered themselves.

Obviously that theory had a few holes. It seems that more than a few of them were lawyers.

When you're dealing with drug dealers, shame is not a major issue.

I discussed this with a friend at work who is Mexican from the border area

close to the one discussed above. He said the mayor of his home town

lives in El Paso, one of the safest towns in the US, for security considerations.
