Given the other systems in place, Those on food stamps etc, would likely just get more money when the cost of food went up as a result of the hike in fuel costs... IMO the govt should man up and put a consumption tax in place and to go along with what you noted, they can put a hefty tax on fuel... people will seek alternatives over time... couple that with higher tarriffs on imports it would cause us to rely on US production more. Yup inflation, but that IMO is the best medicine for the sickness going on...

Fuel is a commodity and will always fluctuate based on demand/ supply and market manipulation.. at some point if there is no incentive to migrate to alternatives, (such as a price hike) then the resource will be depleted and what would the US do then?

Big oil and gas has been in the back pockets of politicians for so long that things like this would take a miracle to get done.

It sucks that they are destorying our sources of food and water to make $ off of gas and oil today.

I am all for a different tax structure and dont mind paying more for things if the money is being spent well.. and it aint... Not enough means testing in place and too many people getting free rides on the backs of the rest. The founding fathers did not envision a welfare state..
