what do you mean by 'lock the price'?

keep it at say $4 even if the price drops to $2..... the difference would go towards the fed tax. On the surface I would be for this but the feds would spend $1.50 for every $1 collected. That's the problem.

side note: The price per gallon varies due to a difference in state taxes on gas while the federal is the same.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

No. 1 - It creates stability, which is many ways is more relevant than having occasionally lower prices.

No. 2 - It helps progress efficiency which is good for the economy in the long run.

Stability? Yeah, stable high prices and stable pain for lower income people that this would effect the most. High gas prices is a lot more than just high pump prices. It effects every single thing we buy. Really, the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

Lower income people would just have to cut down on their luxuries like coffee and cigarettes and rent. What happened to shared sacrifice?

Wish there was a way that funds could be locked. Ideally, I was thinking that the current infrastructure funds could be slashed and this tax could make up the difference (putting a bit aside for periods when very little tax is collected) Unfortunately, our government wouldn't be efficient enough to implement something like this.

And food. Unless the local Walmart has a huge garden behind the store the price of basic food would get much more expensive. Some compassion this guy has.

Food wouldn't be an issue if it weren't for those goddamn hippies standing in the way of Monsanto.

I could support such idea only if every dollar of this "flex tax" would go directly towards debt reduction. There's no practical way to do this, however, so that would make me lean against it. The revenues would only do one thing: spur more spending or - in the current climate - high end tax cuts. In other words, this would do nothing but further accelerate the widening of the income gap. Not desirable.

Actually I was thinking, if food climbs in price - lower income people will eat MORE fast food because it can be cheaper than eating healthy.

Of course. The Wendy's near me is always packed. Always. Even when everything else is empty.
