Old age cynicism is the real killer. It must be depressing to go through the day, embittered over having to pay taxes for things you'll never directly benefit from.

My taxes are not that bad, compared to some, and everything is paid for. It's the kids I feel sorry for, when I become too senile to care, and they have to pay for my pain killers and bingo nights.

You're not paying taxes strictly as fees for service, but that's the kind of mindset that old folks in retirement communities like Sunwest, AZ have where they don't believe their tax money should go towards public schools.

More accurately, taxes are a cost to you for living in the society that you do. Driving by a courthouse that you know you'll never need the services of and feeling bitter that your tax money went, not only to its construction, but for upkeep and staffing, is a very cynical and simplistic understanding of why you pay taxes in the first place.

so what about those who get back more than they paid in?
