Do name variations cause disqualification?

I have a friend from Algeria who applied to the lottery spelling his name the way he usually does in French. But when he looked at his birth certificate recently, he found that the French spelling of his name was a slightly different variation than that he had been using, and his passport uses that other version as well. The difference is very small, e.g. "Mohamed" vs "Mohammed", and the Arabic version is still the same. Is this enough to disqualify him if he is selected? I really, really hope not. :(

I know on the biographic forms (G-325) it asks for all names used. Perhaps he can amend his biographic information form to reflect all the names on file for him. I think this would be better than just "wait and see".

For many names in Arabic, the spelling can differ when written in the Roman alphabet. As clearly both forms of the spelling for his name have been used (passport, birth certificate etc), I'd list all the spellings he has used, if he would get selected.

The spelling confusion isn't limited to Arabic characters either - my grandma's last name was always spelled with just Roman core alphabet, yet I've seen 4 ways of spelling the name (5-7 characters), including it spelled wrong in her marriage certificate, death certificate, and in the cemetery...
