Hey guys,

i just called the ssn office(the worst place to call, worst than banks as you are on hold for more than 30 min) and the lady told me my information has not been verified yet, and it can take up to 6 weeks, but on the letter they gave me from ssn office with my reference number on it it said it takes up to 4 weeks.

I'm startig to stress out as my hubby needs to file taxes by next month, and he can not do it unless i have my ssn.(he could but we would loose money)

So...my question is...should i wait another week or two? it's not like i have much choice, right?

tx again

You don't necessarily need an SSN for your husband to file "married filing jointly" on his taxes. I think he can put down your name and under the ssn section, he could say "ssn number pending" or "nonresident".

If you file jointly, make sure to send a letter to the IRS stating that you are electing to be taxed as a resident for tax purposes and that you are married to a USC.

I would personally wait another few weeks before doing this, to see if your ssn comes in the mail. But if the issues continue, you should look into doing the above.

Nov. 5: Sent AOS Package

Nov 17: AOS received by USCIS

April 1: INTERVIEW DAY. Approved!!!!!!

Early June: Moved to New York City. The only relevant city in the world ;)

When did you visit SSA local office to apply for SSN card? Usually, it will take 2-3 days to get a decision letter from your local SSA office and usually a week later you will get your SSN card if it was approved.

I visited my local ssn office on feb.8th, last month. I think it's a bit ridiculos that takes so long to make a verification...It's going to be a month tomorrow, and this lady told me to call back on friday. Does it really take 6 weeks to verify information???????????????At least this time i was lucky and this lady told me over the phone this info, because last time i called i was on hold for 45 min and they told me they can not tell me anything, for securtity reasons....EVEN IF I HAD MY REFERENCE NUMBER WHICH THEY GAVE ME...

GOSH!!!!!!!!!!

I just have a simple question...why do we have all this new technology: cell phones, internet, fax, scanner, etc etc...if when it comes to preety much anything important you still have to wait, and nothing ever seems to run smoothly. How did people do it before the"new technology"??

He could always file for an extension and file when he gets your SSN.

If he does file without the SSN he would have to get a ITIN which makes no sense as you are going to get the SSN. If he did that then you would have to wait for about 6 weeks for the ITIN to be generated and by that time you may well have had the ssn.

You understand?

So why not just wait and file late? Even if he filed now you can amend your taxes once filed and you will get whatever IRS didnt give you in the initial 1040.

I agree that you should file for an extension and make certain you pay any taxes due by the 18th of April or interest and a penalty will result. DO NOT apply for an individual tax id number (ITIN) as that is for people not elgible for a SSN and it can cause all kinds of problems in the future.

To give you our timeline. Roza applied for her SSN on 01/10/2011. Went back on 01/31/2011 to see where the card was. No answer, but we did get a print out with the SSN on it so we know her number. Went back to the local office 03/04/2011 to see where the card was. They placed an order for a replacement card for the orginial card with an explaination that the first card never arrived. This card will be sent to the local office and we can pick it up in two weeks. We'll see about that.

So I would go to the local office with your original receipt letter and wait in line to see where the card is and maybe you can get the number and then file your taxes on-time.

Good luck.

Dave

The problem is that they are saying that my info was not verified yet by customs(or whoever has to verify it), so i am not sure if they will have a number for me yet. I will do that as soon as they tell me my info came back from customs.

Otherwise wqe will file for extension.

Tx guys for your input on this one!

Call the office that you went into. I was calling the main number and was eventually told to call the office I went to. That's when I found out they didn't take all the info they were supposed to and so it wasn't doing anything... and that's why I waited almost 2 months. It ISN'T supposed to take that long.

I called the national number first and they gave me the number to my local office. AND the local office told me it takes up to 6 weeks. did she just say that to get me out of her hair? I don't know...But she told me to call on friday, and i'm going to call on friday...hec i'm going to call today...and everyday from now ...i'm wondering if the info was even sent...

The lady who i went the first time(at the ssn office)seemed that she didn't really dealt with this kind of ssn card(based on work permit)because she said to us that the computer might be broken because it doesn't want to verify the info. So she didn't even know it's not her computer who verifies that info, but the customs(or imigration people, i don't know exactley the branch)

Oh...my fr###iking gosh..i just called back...and they told me it can take up to 8 weeks, and as soon as they verify it, they will send me a letter saying either they need more info  or that it has been verified. I got a bit upset as yesterday she told me 6 weeks...and now it's 8 weeks...wyf? While i understand that the homeland security and the SSN office ..they don't work exclusively for me...i don;t understand why on earth takes 8 weeks to verify something that you normaly just push a button?? THis just doesn't make any sense to me!!

That really stinks. I vote for getting an ITIN number for now if you don;t want to wait and file taxes late. Your SSN will come up eventually. What a bunch of ridiculos morons.

We also went to the SS office multiple times trying to get a SS# and were turned away until whatever computer system it is they use was updated with my husbands info in it. Theres nothing you can do except be a pain and keep trying every few days until its in the system.

Youre correct they dont work exclusively for you, but that doesnt mean you dont have the right to stand on line or call every single day if you want to and ask if youre in the system yet.

What I dont understand is the part in the initial post about your husband needing to file taxes by next month?? Taxes are not due until April. Whats the big rush about needing to file by next month? You dont technically lose any money. If youre getting a refund, the sooner you file the sooner you'll receive it. But thats different then loosing money.

I assume your app was based on EAD, looking at yer timeline,

as

there's no way you could qualify as a K-1 visa holder based on yer POE date, even 2 months ago.

You really should get back in, talk with a supervisor, show the EAD card, ask for another SAVE db lookup.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
