Not sure if you have seen this yet but this is the form you will fill out for DEERS enrollment http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/infomgt/forms/eforms/dd1172-2.pdf (DD1172) It does request the dependent's SSN but I'm not sure if it's required as such. You might want to hunt around for the accompanying notes.

I enrolled in DEERS two days after our wedding but I had the SSN by then (you can get them before marriage). Afraid I can't answer your question about benefits but I'm sure someone else here will know more than me.

Congrats on the marriage!

Nope, you don't need an SSN, atleast I was able to get mine without it. The lady did say that I would need to "update" them with my SSN within 6 months. This was before we even started our visajourney so there was no way I was getting one in that time.

When I went in to update them after I actually had one (aprox 11 months later) no one said a thing.

So I would say you are good to go!

You can get the Military Dependant ID without a social security number. They will use the I-94 number instead. When the social security number is obtained, you go back to you personnel folks and update DEERS with the new number. I did that for my wife and step daughter so I could get them into TRICARE as soon as possible. Both had military ID cards the day after the certified marriage certificate arrived, which was about 1 1/2 weeks after they arrived on K1/2 visa's.

Actually this makes a lot of sense, especially in the instance of a K2 visa (child). They cannot get their social security card until they adjust status and need their military ID well before then.
