I just liked it because Atticus represents how lawyers "should be", and that the American legal system isn't meant to be unfair.

Absolutely!

Oh, and risking my inner-nerd pouring out in the internet.

Anything by Carl Sagan.

*hides*

Haha YES! Carl Sagan is awesome. I loved Contact, and of course Cosmos. Cosmos the miniseries is also well worth watching, even some 20 years later.

uhh... I think we've established that the OP is better read in English than most Americans. ESL != children's books only.

"Hank the Cowdog" provides a much more accurate portrayal of american life than "Middlesex". Like Hank, most American men are not confused about their sex.

They're not childrens books, they're family books. There's a whole bunch of big words in there. lots of humor, suspense and in depth analysis. It's a veritable

cornucopia of American culture

Paul Revere's Ride by David Hackett Fischer is a book every American should read.

Someone told me long ago that To Kill the Mocking Bird was along the lines of Uncle Tom's Cabin but with more good guys, so as I did not really enjoy Uncle Tom much, I skipped the Mocking Bird - looks like it's worth catching up on it.

A bunch of thanks for replies, guys!!

Terry, some books you might like that aren't American but have been translated to English, is the Dragon Tattoo trilogy by Stieg Larsson. The books were originally written in Swedish, and take place in Stockholm. If you like mysteries and don't mind violence, all three of the books are great! The books are The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.
