March 5, 1616- The Holy Office of the Inquisition published its verdict on the theories of Copernicus, and Galileo. It read: " The idea that the Earth goes around the Sun is Foolish, Philosophically Erroneous and Heretical, since it contradicts Holy Scripture. The idea that the Earth revolves on its axis is also Ridiculous and Heretical." Galileo’s writings were not removed from the Index of Banned Books until 1835.

The 1616 ruling was based on the overwhelming scientific evidence of the time. Copernicus and Galileo were in the minority.

This is another example of a "government body" choosing "science" which supports its agenda, and trying to stamp out science that disagrees with it. Nothing new under the sun.

It is also grammatically incorrect.

The earth rotates about an axis, that revolves around the sun, (which is also in motion,) perturbed primarily by the moon, harmonic oscillations, and the rest of the matter in the solar system. :bonk:

I'm curious - how does it contradict Holy Scripture? Where does it say that the Earth

does not revolve around the Sun?

I'm not sure, but the Book of Genesis describes the creation of the heavens and earth and there's at least an implied understanding that earth was at the center of the universe.

Fine, so then it would have been ok to say that the Sun revolves around the Earth?

If that is true, why don't we still believe in the geocentric model of the universe?

Perfect example. Thanks

Science eventually overcame conservative dogmatic belief and the geocentric theory was discredited.

Perhaps I missed something. What is that a perfect example of?

That science can overcome its beliefs, and its beliefs can be discredited. Thanks again
