First US port of entry-picking up my luggage ???

Hi everybody !

I have a question for those who already flew to US.

Now, I should be travelling to US on 25th of March that is if we get approved on the interview on Thursday :D

This is how my journey would look like :

Croatia,Zagreb airport --> Austria,Vienna airport

Austria , Vienna airport --> US,Washington,Dulles International

Dulles International --> Raleigh/Durham International, North Carolina

My question is :

Will i have to pick up the luggage once i get to Washington and go trough customs ?

And after that, do i have to check in my luggage again with the US Airways or is there some ''drop off luggage'' belt ??If yes, where should i find that magic belt ?

Thanks in advance for your input, i really need help about this so i can know how much time should i have between connecting flights !!

Congrats to you guys! :thumbs:

I have only flown through IAD once internationally, and can't remember the details as well as I should - however, every airport I have flown through here from an international origin requires that you go through customs after arrival, then pick up your luggage, then have it screened again, and then drop it off to be sent onward to your destination. If I remember right, it's not hard to find nor far from where you pick it up. Worry not!

If your luggage is checked straight through you should only need to pick it up and put it in the scanner belts then drop it onto a drop off belt, if not you may have to wait at a little counter to get the new luggage tag put on then stick it on the belt.

For that specific airport you may be able to find photos online by doing a google search or looking up the airports website. May help you feel more comfortable if you can see pictures. ( it did for me when I flew really long distance flights to new places )

Yeah you pick up your lugage after immigration and bring it through customs. Right after customs, there will be a drop off belt, if I remember right it is on the left as you come through the doors after customs. There will be staff to direct you.
