Getting a Visa from Rio de Janeiro

you don't need a permission to visit the island... you just have to pay a daily fee to stay in there but that you do when you get there.

We had the visa mailed and it took 12 days. There was a problem with the computer so it took them 5 days to mail it. We had no problems staying in Rio. We stayed for 5 days but I had to get back to work otherwise we would have stayed to pick up the visa. Good luck at your interview

Rio isn't much more dangerous than New York and compared to São Paulo Rio is safe

I'll try to convice her to stay there at least unitl the visa is ready....

Good idea. If she's so concerned about Rio being dangerous nothing says you can't spend the day inside the hotel, there's lots of things you can do there

We got our visa 2 working days after the interview. I would wait and pick it up, not taking chance on it delayed in mail.

The difference, in my experience, is that in Sao Paulo and New York (the cities Nessa compared Rio to), you can (mostly) avoid the VERY dangerous areas. In my neighborhood in SP, I couldn't see anything skeazy for blocks and blocks.

In Rio the dangerous areas run into the safe areas. For example, I knew a woman who lived in a building in Ipanema where her side of the building had one cost of rent, because it faced a very nice square, and the other half of the building had half the rent, because their side of the building faced a favela and they had bullet holes in their windows.

In Rio last month, a young Portuguese man was knifed to death for apparently no reason in Copacabana, and a group of tourists was attacked in Lapa during the day. In my three or four months I've spent there, I've seen two groups of tourists get held up. In mid-day. At quiosques in Copacabana.

As an American, I'd say do what you can to stay in Rio while you wait for the visa ANWAY. If your girlfriend wants to stay safe in Rio, and you'd like to do the touristy Rio thing, stick to Ipanema at least. There are so many amazing things to do as a tourist in Rio, despite its dangers, that I would never recommend anyone skip it! The first time I went there was as a 10-day vacation, and I stayed for 5 weeks! I love it! (But don't tell my fiance, he is paulista )

It's really taking two days now? I thought it used to be issued the same day as the interview, or the next day at the latest? Now two? That sucks! Oh well, looks like Sedex is her only option now.
