Getting a Visa from Rio de Janeiro

Ok. Our interview is on a Thursday October 5. I wonder when we get the visa because Monday is Holiday (Columbus Day) and we don't want to stay in Rio for 7 days to get the visa on the 10. So if we have them mail to Novo Homburgo (14 hours bus ride south of Sao Paulo), would they mail it on the 10 or the 6 of October? Dose it take a couple days for mail to deliver in Brazil? Do they deliver on the Brazilian Holiday (Our Lady of Aparedica)? So it's possible we wouldn't get the visa until Friday October 13? :crying: We are planning to fly out on 14 of Saturday. Any thoughts anyone?

Wait, if your interview is on Thursday, and Monday is a holliday, then you won't get your visa until Tuesday. If you pay for it to be mailed to you, it would probably get there either Tuesday or Wednesday, or even later if something happens.

But they take 2 days to give the passport back with the visa, and the number of days for sedex to send it after they issue it.

So if it's Sedex. We get it on tuesday or Wednesday. Is Sedex same day delivery? I think the consular won't mail until Tuesday right? So we should get it Wednesday, I hope.

But since it's Sedex she might get it on Tuesday or Wednesday though.

I doubt it's same day delivery. It takes from 2 days to more days to be sent.

If I were you I'd stay in Rio til wednesday, because it takes them 2 work day to deliver you in hands the passport with the visa, at least that's what they told me, my interview is tuesday oct 10, thursday is holiday so they told me to stay in Rio til friday the 13, because it's 2 days not counting the interview day, the holidays and the weekends. Rio is very beautiful you should spend some quality time there with your loved one.

Any doubts call the consulate or e-mail them, ask about your options.

Good luck!

It's really taking two days now? I thought it used to be issued the same day as the interview, or the next day at the latest? Now two? That sucks! Ana (who lives in Sao Paulo) says that Rio is much much much too dangerous of a city to spend one extra hour in if we don't need to, she wants to interview, get her visa and get out of that hell hole, but I guess it's not possible. Oh well, looks like Sedex is her only option now.

As far as I know, it's always taken 2 days. You can wait and get the visa in person of have them mail it. Also, Rio is not that dangerous... São Paulo is equally dangerous - if she can deal with São Paulo, Rio will be a piece of cake :) I've never had any problems in Rio, safety-wise.

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

Ya, I know Rio isn't any worse than Sao Paulo. :) I don't know what the deal is with her and Rio...I suspect she doesn't want me out on the beach..lol. I traveled to both Sao Paulo and the flew us out to Salvador/Bahia last April....just used common sense and we really enjoyed ourselves, and never felt unsafe in either area.

I know... it's usual to find paulistanos who are afraid of going to Rio and cariocas who are afraid of coming to São Paulo. It's just the fear of having to deal with something you're not really used to...

You'd have such a good time in Rio, though! Try and talk her into staying there! :)

I'll try to convice her to stay there at least unitl the visa is ready....

I know the goal of me heading down there is to help ensure we get the visa approved, but dammit....$1200 for a R/T plane ticket from Seattle to Rio? I'd like to check out some things for AT LEAST a day!! :)

We do love turtles and I'm also an avid scuba diver. We thought about visiting Fernando de Noronha, but it looked like you needed some sort of permission to visit from the government which could have taken some time so we scrapped that idea for now, but we did wind up staying in Praia Do Forte, which is like the turtle capitol of the world!! Beautiful area just about an hour out of Salvador.
