I am a student in the US with a F1 visa that is valid till 2014. I'm from India. My 18 year old girlfriend in India just finished school and is awaiting her results which come out in June. In this time she wants to come visit me for a month. What do you think her chances are? Her dad is a respected professor in a college there, he has property and bank statements. How do you think she should present her case?

It won't matter what her dad's assets are or what his position is, the CO will only care what her ties to India are.

What are the 'results' that you speak of that she is waiting for?

Based on the information you gave in your post, I would say her chances are not good.

Her high-school final results, officially called ISC in India which they use to gain admission in Indian colleges. It's like APs in the US. How do you think she should present her case to improve her chances?

I really don't think it would make a difference. They want to see proof of her ties to India. If she were already admitted to an Indian college, that might help her case, but just the prospect of it proves no ties. Even if she was admitted to a college, her chances are very slim. She's very young and has a boyfriend in the US. It's going to be difficult for her to prove she doesn't intend to immigrate.

IMO, the only way her chances improve is when she is admitted to a school in India, paid tuition, and has a dedicated course of study.

I know this is not what you want to hear and perhaps there are others who have been in this same situation and still were issued a tourist visa. However, CO's decide "strong ties" on a case by case basis.

Pardon me if this sounds weird, but I've heard that if the applicant hands over Bank FDs or insurance policies in their name to the consulate, using them as collateral, they are granted visa on condition that their collateral would be liquidated if the applicant does not return within the stipulated time? I'm sorry I'm desperate but staying away from each other is taking a huge toll on our relationship and her visiting me would make matters a lot better.

Never heard of a surety, would make some sense. My guess is that those with that sort of assets are more likely to get a visa.

To the OP, nobody knows except unless she applies it is 0.

Nope, no bond or collateral.

She applies, proves her ties, it's up to the CO. Pretty much a #######-shoot, 50/50 chance as far as tourist visas from India are concerned.

Nope does not happen that way, whoever told you this has no clue what they are talking.

She has no ties in India - she is not in middle of semester where she will likely come back to India to complete her degree or anything. To get a tourist visa for her would be diffcult.

She is young and no ties and chances of her living past her visa dates in US are high.

Hey, a quick question. Is it necessary that the port of entry and the place of arrival stated in the app have to be the same? My gf is gonna put Durham, NC as the place where she's going to stay in the US but we were planning to meet in the US, since there are cheap deals from Kolkata to NYC and we could even roam about NYC for a couple of days before returning to Durham, NC. Now, my question is will the immigration officer not let her in NYC?

Not an issue
