i heard that is not in the best interest of an employee to change employers while on h1b. does this have to do with the path to GC from h1b? if i change my employer so i still get only 6 years in total of h1b sponsorship? by when does the employer has to sponsor me for gc to be sure i will not be out of status?

thanks

Andreea

If an employer sponsors you for a Green Card it doesn't make any sense to change it while you are in this process. It's a waste of time and money as you will have to abandon the application and start all over again with a different company.

Also a new H1B visa is issued only in your home country and it will be for 3 years, not 6. Yes, you will have the opportunity to apply for a 3 years extension but nobody can guarantee here that it gets approved all the time.

A Green Card application based on employment takes a longer time comparing to a marriage based GC, so the sooner the employer starts the process the better.

H1b is a temporary work visa.

An Employer can sponsor someone for a GC, there is no requirement for them to do so for those on temporary work visa's. Obviously not a cheap process.
