British Air lost my luggage. I got it back the next day but they still lost it!

I don't like NWA. Last time I used NWA I went to MN for work and it felt like we were dropping from the sky instead of landing.

When I took Lufthansa in Dec/Jan I had wonderful flights.

About exchanging money....take a lot of singles with you...the airports usually take US $ but will only give change back in Euros. Also when you get to Egypt there are lovely fellows who will help you with your luggage. You can tip them like $2. You can use ATMs in Egypt and you'll get cash in LE. Just remember $1 is about 5.75LE.

no, no Air france. If you take airfrance give yourself an extra 10 hours of delays.

10 hours would have been great!!!! I left cairo on a Saturday night for a 17 hr trip with a 1 1/2hr stop in Milan, and and arrived in Chicago Tuesday morning. Alitalia (alitalia and air france are the same or related somehow) did not care. It was a terrible experience. eww I am getting flashbacks. Aren't there direct flights from NY? If there are, I would take whatever airline was doing that...but don't trust alitalia with any layovers.

I went with Alitalia once and Lufansa (sp?) once. Both flights were ok....just make sure your layovers are adequate. I almost didn't make one flight because one plane was delayed  My trip to Egypt was my first out of the states also and it was super easy......a BREEZE!!! You will be fine. (F)

You'll be fine. IF you ever get lost or need help just don't be afraid to ask anyone! There's usually tons of people who work at the airport floating around just ask anyone. Good luck and have fun!

Ahh baksheesh. There will always be people around to "help" you and then expect LELELELE in return. They haunt the pyramids and every other tourist spot, offering to show you "secret tombs" and the like. Just ignore most of em.

Check with your bank and let them know you'll be traveling to Egypt, and will have some charge there, so they don't freak and lock your account. Using your debit card at atms there is really easy, but you'll need LE to do most transactions. There are a few scattered around the downtown area, by the Nile Hilton and Egyptian Museum, and a few hidden in Khan Khalili.

Ok peeps, nothing to do with visa's but I'm about to book my trip from the US (Boston) to Cairo. The shortest duratios are with either Alitalia or Air France, both with layovers of a min of 1 1/2 hour to a max of 3 hours.

Which would you experienced folk choose?

I flew into Cairo twice (*sigh* why cant I be there now?? :crying: ) and used Northwest, KLM and Lufthansa. All three were good, but...Lufthansa has very generous drinks, above and beyond the normal :D ! I was lucky in that they had the best prices available and I had no complaints about the service.

I've flown those airlines as well, in addition to United and British Air.

The Northwest/KLM is definately my favorite. The flight over the atlantic usually sucks big time. But, the flight from Amsterdam down to Cairo is heaven on earth. Ahhhhhhh.

I agree, why the hate for AF? The only time I dealt with a "typical" French attitude was the very first time I flew them, I got in the "L'Espace" line instead of "Tempo". When the (obviously) Parisian guy realized I was just a coach passenger he kicked up his nose and told me to go to the other line. Since then when I've needed extra attention (like when I missed a connection in Paris) their service has been exemplary.

I was starting to worry! I usually fly Lufthansa from Dallas connecting thru Frankfurt and have never had a problem (knock on wood as they say) . . . that is 4 times in the past 2 going on 3 years, hehe. Now, I have tons of frequent flier miles due to work travel and enough on Delta to get myself to Egypt . . . let me see now, seems I'm leaving on the 17th flying Continental to Paris then Air France to Cairo then back . . . sooooooooooo, not much choice when you use those miles. A friend of mine flies Continental a lot for her domestic and trans-atlantic trips, so I think it is OK for me too.

Sometime this year or next, I have to book a flight on Lufthansa to get enough for a coach ticket back to Cairo . . . hmmmmm, I have over 40000 miles on LH so I am close. I am considering going twice in 2007. . . not sure I'll make either time I have planned, but so far I have alternative dates in January, April, June and September, LOL.

How do frequent flyer miles work? How do you earn them? From whom do you earn them?

I earned most of my FF miles from trips that I have taken for business. Most airlines have a program you can sign up with. I am signed up with both American Airlines and Delta, but the first trip I took to Egypt was on Lufthansa and they aren't partners with any FF program that I already had . . . so I had to sign up for them too.

Also credit cards . . . I get miles for charges on American Express AND the ones from my Business AE really do give lots (consider that staying in a hotel for nearly 5 months is part of what got charged last year). There are various things you can sign up for like my grocery store has a hook into American Airlines so I get miles for eating.

Now the catch is in being able to use them and not being blacked out . . . like a lot of holidays. Or having to travel on days you might want to because that's the only way to get the flights.

Going Platinum this summer on those 3 Hong Kong trips was really nice . . . lol, double miles!! Plus I got upgraded to Business Class on one LA to HK leg . . . sweeeeeet!!
