Hi. I was just wondering if there was a trend either way...like most do have a tourist visa, or most don't, or...is it too hard to say?

I'm also wondering if information from tourist visa travels ever gets someone into trouble with a fiancé visa application.

I've nearly constantly had a tourist visa in my passport throughout this process and it hasn't influenced my application, as far as I know. I live pretty close to the border though so maybe my frequent crossings cause *less* questions because I do it so regularly?

Sorry, this was supposed to say applicants, not applications. Doing too many things at once.

I don't understand the point of your post. A tourist visa and K1 visa are completely separate and having a tourist visa while applying for K1 is irrelevant. Though I believe the tourist visa is cancelled when you receive the K1 visa.

I understand that they are separate. Maybe a better way of asking it would have been: what % of K-1 applicants already had a tourist visa before they started on the K-1? It was just something I was curious about.

I had a valid tourist visa during my entire k1 application. The CO at my k1 interview cancelled it without prejudice infront of me BEFORE telling me I was approved. I was horrified. I was just thinking that he would deny me plus cancel my tourist visa too.. haha.. You cannot imagine the relief I felt when he said I was approved. I don't think its a factor though, having one wouldnt affect your k1..

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

Oh well some would have had to to meet. Some countries (like the UK and Australia for starters) don't need it because we have the VWP (Visa Waiver Program). Some countries can't get visitors visas easily at all so it's the USC that visits them.

I still don't understand why you're curious... maybe I'm being obtuse. Is it because you wonder if it's easier to get approved if you have a tourist visa? Or harder? usually there's a reason for the qn so I'm now curious about why you're curious. I'll answer my own qns though and say having or not having a tourist visa doesn't make the process easier or harder. The only hard part is for some people who are from the countries that don't easily approve visitor visas so those people struggle with the fact their family can't come to the wedding in the US (which is why many have a big engagement ceremony or something).

I didn't.

My guess is that the majority of K1's did not.

My husband has never had a tourist visa. I visited him twice in Brazil before we started the K1 process (for about 6 months total). He never even had a passport, he got it during our K1 process. His first trip outside of Brazil was when he entered with his K1.

My fiancé didn't either. In fact he's from a country where it's very difficult to get one so I had to go to him. I was given a 5yr multi-use visitor's visa for Gambia which is a good thing because now I can go back anytime.

We were told that it was almost impossible for a single Russian woman to get a tourist visa to enter the United States. But Elena got one quickly and easily. Took about 30 days to get. And she used it to come here twice.

I think if you made a false statement in getting your tourist visa, even if you got away with it when you got the visa, it could come back to haunt you during the K-1 process.

Jane is actually on her second tourist visa since I submitted our I-129F. She was very hesitant to apply at first because she thought it would be impossible for a single Chinese woman to get a visa. She had no problem at all. In fact she had it renewed with no interview and they gave her 24 months instead of 12.

She came to the US most recently in December and was selected for a scondary interview at the POE. She told the officer that I was waiting for our NOA2 and that she was in the process of getting her K-1. She asked him very directly if it was a problem for her to enter on her B-1 and he said "not at all".

I don't know if most applicants have a tourist visa but if they do they can certainly use it.

...and I have a two year multi-entry Chinese visa

My fiance applied for a visitor visa 5 years ago and was denied. When he went for his interview he showed in the system as applying for one, plus they ask on the DS156 application. It did not cause a problem with him getting approved. We were approved. However, he did have another passport at the time he applied for the tourist visa which also showed in the US embassy system. They just had him cancel the old passport before they would give him the k1 visa.
