No more retarded than the VWP were you let people in on the honor system that they will leave. They don't even verify that they aren't criminals or that they are educated. At least DV winners have both verified.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Isn't there a security check thing you have to do now before coming in on the vwp? That thing where you go online and give info and pay.

What a joke! The race card gets thrown out on the table once again.

Your assertions are rather lame considering that the vast majority of US immigration is non-white. But let's not let the facts get in the way of your prejudices.

To be fair, the majority of the world's population is not white. It would be obvious to assume that the majority of US immigrants, given all reasons for immigration taken together, would not be 'white.'

I think my post hereaddresses part of your response.

Yes. ESTA. $16 last I looked and approval took about 2 days, tops.

2 day checks catch nothing. The "white" population of the US holds steady at about 80 % ( Hispanics are a subset of white and it used to be 75% white and 11 % Hispanic and is now 54% white and 25% hispanic. Blacks have only increased by 2% and Asians have doubled from 4 to 8%. So the US is still a nation of whites and even with the DV lottery working at balancing the picture it isn't even come close. Just because the system is full of fraud doesn't mean that is should be stopped. If that logic holds up for government programs then welfare would be on the chopping block also. And throwing out the "terrorist country" card is as lame as it gets. The 9-11 group came on other visa types maybe they should really close those types if they want stem terrorism

DV was never going to change the racial composition of the country in any significant way. The program is simply not large enough. Yes, it has had some regional impact - for example, the significant Bangladeshi population in the Queens is primary thanks to the DV program. But overall the effect is minor.

Frankly, I there there is merit to the position that since we've had two decades of higher-than-historical-average immigration levels, it's not a bad idea to let the new spices simmer for a while before we open up the pot again.

If you take DV away from under represented countries how do those people have a decent immigration path to the US ? Are you going to purpose opening up more visitors visas so they can have an equal chance to spouse shop ?

There is no right to have a "decent immigration path" to the U.S. This country is under no obligation to provide one. American immigration policy ought to be determined by one thing and one thing alone - what's best for the U.S.

We usually don't agree on much, but believe it or not, that has always been my position on immigration policy. What is in the best interests of the vast majority of the American people and to maintain a cohesive society. Too many people on VJ look at immigration as some sort of charity event to save the world and improve the lives of immigrants or as some sort of social experiment to reinvent America. American immigration policy should be a mutually beneficial endeavor and not a burden on society or a divisive policy that polarizes society.

Immigration for immigration's sake is not a good policy. There is no right to immigrate nor is any country obligated to allow immigration.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

It has always been immigrants that provide fresh enthusiasm to the American system. The reason why we let in these people is that they are good for America. They are educated and provide the US with a co mingling of concepts that are key to what we once were. Because these people are prohibited from jumping on the welfare wagon they are also productive members of the society.

ESTA approval is not always instant, and if you have issues you can not use the VWP, you would have to apply for a B.

Totally agree, there may be a long time awaiting for Immigration reform but getting rid of the DV would be a good first step.

Most VWP nationals are eligible for the DV.

Looks like according to you it would be even better to cancel asylum/refugees immigration.

Those are the people who bring even less with them to the US than lottery winners.
