spooky, don't let charles spook you. i haven't torrented in a while so i'm not going to recommend a particular client but i will recommend using virtual machines for your torrenting. do you have access to vmware? if not, contact your local corporate it geek.

Can I set up a vm on my pc? I don't know if I will even bother, but I have heard so much about it that I thought I'd do a little research. I know that everything on torrent sites is not illegal, you can legally download Linux, etc. I am just worried about malware and doing something to get in trouble.

Yes you can use something like vmware to run vms on a pc. No need to use torrents to dl something like linux as this is readily avail on the "web". Vms prevent you from compromising your machine as they allow you to setup disposable oses.

If you were running Linux your chances of malware are extremely small, correct? Why would a vm be necessary? I really don't know squat about this.

Malware is less prevalent on linux, true. However, while linux has come a long way in terms of desktop environments, it just falls short of windows in terms of reliability, ease of use, and hardware support. Im talking specifically about flavors targeted as windows replacements such as mint and ubuntu. Ubuntu is especially disappointing on laptops.

I have done a lot of Torrents. The number one thing is to always make a virus scan on anything downloaded before opening. Also it is best to download only trusted torrents. I am able to throw caution to the wind somewhat as I have two laptops though and to do things like torrents I use an older laptop where I can afford to lose everything and redo though. Some reason I very seldom get a bad torrent but I am careful on which torrents I download. I only will download a torrent that has been recently set up by people I trust at a site I trust. A couple of times I have downloaded a torrent and did a scan and it was shown to be infected. I get rid of it and report it to the site that it was shown to be that way. We have that torrent taken down and the person that set the torrent up banned from future postings.

I use utorrent client and after having used others I have found it to be the best for me anyway. It also makes it easy if I want to make a torrent for someone and will do so and seed it for a week or two. Also make sure you use peer block. It helps avoid people seeing what you are downloading. Do not ever download hollywood movies or any songs. I have a lifetime membership to down load music that cost me a one time fee years ago and it is worth that fee to avoid being sued.

My brother uses it and has a little trick where he just types the name of the album or artist followed by a .123 (not 123 but some other letters) and it comes up with the full album for free every single time.

I will ask him for this sequence of letters and will repost later.
