probably true, as "all men are created equal" you do remember that, don't you?

Sure, all people are created equal. All home environments aren't, however.

My parents have advanced degrees. I grew up in a home that valued education, reading, vocabulary, and what do you know, I got a stellar SAT score.

Which they say is more an indicator of your economic background than your intelligence...

so what you're saying is those who are disadvantaged don't value education, reading, and vocabulary skills?

Nope. I'm saying when parents have high education levels, their children are more likely to achieve them. Obviously, this perpetuates cycles.

Ok, I lied. I have to reply.

I was almost removed from my home because of abuse. I carry many of the physical scars of it to this day. I was constantly told that I was worthless, scum, trash, and a rotten little #######. I wasn't allowed to do homework. I wasn't allowed to wear clean clothes to school. I didn't have running water until I moved out. It wasn't often that I had any kind of decent food, or food at all for that matter.

I had the 3rd highest SAT score in my school.

Next mindless generalization?

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

lol. my home life was not what i'd call stellar, nessa knows the details but i'll refrain from sharing it here. and i survived it and don't use it as an excuse.

oh btw, alex, back in the mid 80's someone ran the asvab scores for the entire brigade. about 1500 people. guess who was on the top of the list ;)

Cian, I'm sorry you had to go through that.

We NEED to look at generalizations. Sometimes we view generalizations positively; at those times, we call it the big picture.

There are MANY white people who live in poverty and MANY minority group members who live opulent lifestyles. Saying that white people make more on average than black people (true) says NOTHING about individuals and their capacity to succeed. Generalizations like "X race talks louder" or something like that are useless. Generalizations like "hey, why is it that a white guy with the same qualifications as a black guy is more likely to make more money doing the same job?" are very useful.

Sure, Heina's coworker makes more than her. But that does not mean that because we can find examples of how the rule is not true, the rule is therefore meaningless.

But there are reasons for trends, and institutionalized racism has a lot to do with it.

So my "generalization" is anything but mindless, and I wish more people would consider them.

That's why there's no such thing as "'reverse' racism."

I have to disagree with you on this one. Although it might not be what you would consider the overall norm for the general population (I am not going to dig into that research and confirm that assumption through statistics so hope I'm right ;) )It does happen, and to ignore that it exists is no differant than ignoring what is generally referred to in our society as "racism", discriminationing against someone based on their race, no matter whether it's a minority or majority, is still racism.

More to the point I myself have experienced what people refer to as reverse racism on a personal level.

Many years ago I was working in a company that was faced with cutbacks for the first time in their existance. The company was very well known at that time for how well they treated their employees and was non-union. Faced with these circumstances, rather than basing the cutbacks on seniority, they were based on job performance. My work group consisted of 4 women, two who had been with the company a number of years and myself and one other who were newer and hired within 3 days of one another. We all had the same job functions, but each of us were assigned separate but equal sections of the facility to service. There was only one thing that we all actually worked together on.

My own performance was considered exemplary and complimented. I not only did what was expected, I would wherever possible do more. The other girl that was hired around the same time as myself was polar opposite. Her work was not done well or completed, there were multiple complaints about her performance, the one task all worked together on, she would never even make her way to that area let alone do her share, and she had a history of coming in late and leaving early. As I said before the company was known for treating their employees well, so when our manager realized there was a problem he did try to work with her. She felt her workload was too much for her to handle, so it was decreased repeatedly. Eventually at the request of my manager I took on 1/2 of her responsibilities along with my own. (and still was able to handle the load)

When we started hearing about the cutbacks, at first all 4 of us really didn't think we would be effected considering our work load, but we were wrong. About 2 days before our group was hit, we started to hear rumors it was going to happen and this woman made a point of standing in the middle of the hallway and loudly proclaiming that if they tried to let her go, she would file discrimination charges against them. BTW our group consisted of two white women, a mexican woman and her...who was black.

Rather than have the company name drug through the mud on racism charges no matter how unfounded they might be the company instead let ME go.

I admit though I was fortunate, we all knew what was happening although it wasn't spoken. When they broke the news to me they did stress it was not due to my performance and first available opening they would contact me so I could return. In 4 months they followed through with that. I was the only one of all those let go to be allowed to return, and spent the next 22 years there.

For the other girl...after I left that day they called the department into a last minute meeting and informed them that from that point on they would be closely monitoring everyone, and anyone found coming in late or leaving early would be subject to immediate termination. I didn't take long for her to hang herself, it was a keycard entry system and all employees times were documented in computerized security logs.

The point is, I was discriminated against because someone intentionally and knowingly used their race, and corporate concern over issues of racism to push me out of a job I worked hard to do well and income I needed, knowing that with the cutbacks being based on performance it would have been her that was let go.

Psychocat:

Affirmative Action and anti-discrimination employment laws are not perfect (or even close) but they are better than nothing, if you are interested in eventually evening the playing field that many people feel is already even.

In the little-picture, though, lots of unfair incidents like this do happen. I don't think we can call it "reverse racism" though.

edit: double post

An unfortunate little-picture event. A necessary big-picture event, until they figure out something better than affirmative action.

They didn't lay her off because she was white. It was because they didn't want their azzes sued off by the black woman. Typical.
