You should be posting in the Adjustment of status from tourist visas forum.

Need more info about your case as to make sure advice given is correct. You live in NY now? You are from Canada?

Topic moved from K-3 forum to AOS from a Work, Student & Tourist Visa forum as K-3 is a dead visa process, OP is still in the country and entered on a de-facto Canadian visitor status so is eligible to adjust status from within the US and this is the proper forum for that discussion.

To c777 - you don't need the I-129f just the I-130 along with the I-485 and related forms. You will find useful information about how to file to adjust your status and get your green card by reading the Guides above as well as the pinned topics here: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/7-adjustment-of-status-green-card-from-family-based-visas/ . You have the additional stop of including the I-130 but in almost all other particulars the process is the same. Do not apply for an I-131 - Advance Parole - you cannot leave it as you cannot leave the US and be allowed to return until after you get your green card. You can definitely do this process without a lawyer - just read a lot and ask a lot of questions here on Visa Journey.

Good luck.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
