Moore On Wealthy People's Money: "That's Not Theirs, That's A National Resource, It's Ours"

"They're sitting on the money, they're using it for their own -- they're putting it someplace else with no interest in helping you with your life, with that money. We've allowed them to take that. That's not theirs, that's a national resource, that's ours. We all have this -- we all benefit from this or we all suffer as a result of not having it," Michael Moore told Laura Flanders of GRITtv.

"I think we need to go back to taxing these people at the proper rates. They need to -- we need to see these jobs as something we some, that we collectively own as Americans and you can't just steal our jobs and take them someplace else," Moore concluded.

Oh the irony!

Michael Moore Net Worth $25 Million USD

Michael Moore is a controversial documentary filmmaker with a net worth of $25 million. Kind of ironic for someone who released a scathing documentary on capitalism considering how much he has personally has benefited from it. Moore’s biggest three movies; Bowling For Columbine, Fahrenheit 911 and Capitalism A Love Story have earned over $300 million at the box office. If you conservatively assume he has been entitled to 10% of his film’s proceeds that’s a tidy $30 million which is $19.5 million after taxes, and most insiders would agree that would be a very low ball estimate. Consider this:

Fahrenheit shattered box office records for documentary films, raking in $228 million in theaters and another $3 million in DVD sales. After the theaters take their traditional 50% cut, that leaves roughly $130 million. Take away marketing, production and distribution expenses and conservatively you are left with $80 million. Hot off his prior films success Moore was able to secure a deal from Miramax which guaranteed him 27% of the films net revenues, or roughly $21.6 million. Michael also was entitled to 50% of the profits of Sickowhich are estimated to be $17 million.

Moore is also the author of several best selling books and was rumored to have received a $1 million advance for “Dude Where’s My Country” plus a generous percentage of the book sales.

Moore financed his first documentary Roger and Me by holding neighborhood bingo nights around his hometown of Flynt Michigan. He eventually sold the documentary to Warner Brothers for $3 million.

Michael Moore To Receive Taxpayer Subsidy He Criticized In 2008

By Noel Sheppard | January 31, 2010 | 21:54

Michael Moore's schlockumentary "Capitalism: A Love Story" has been approved for a taxpayer-funded subsidy he once criticized.

According to the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, a nonpartisan Michigan-based think tank, Moore's 2009 film is set to receive an undisclosed amount of money from the Michigan Film Office.

Yet Moore, who ironically advises the state-run Office, told a forum in July 2008 that he was opposed to such subsidies (video of MCPP's findings on this matter embedded below the fold along with highlights from its January 28 press release):

"While we don't blame Mr. Moore and his production team for taking what is offered, it's striking that a movie focused on the inequities of granting taxpayer dollars to private enterprise would apply for and receive taxpayer-funded incentives," said Michael LaFaive, fiscal policy director at the Mackinac Center. "Government should not be bailing out or subsidizing Wall Street banks or main street filmmakers. As Moore knows, this marriage between government and business - in the name of creating and saving jobs - can facilitate every sort of mischief."

At a forum in July 2008, Moore seemed critical of the program, which provides filmmakers with refundable tax credits worth as much as 42 percent of expenditures for movies made in the state.

"These are large multinational corporations - Viacom, GE, Rupert Murdoch - that own these studios," said Moore at the Traverse City event. "Why do they need our money, from Michigan, from our taxpayers, when we're already broke here? I mean, they play one state against another, and so they get all this free cash when they're making billions already in profits. What's the thinking behind that?"

So, as Moore was making a film about evil capitalists taking money from regular folk, he was actually applying for a taxpayer subsidy from a state with huge fiscal problems and staggeringly high unemployment:

I've had an id permbanned from dailykos for making fast food jokes on Micheal Moore threads. Fortunately, they don't seem to do IP bans so my next id is always a few minutes away.
