This probably belongs somewhere else on this site, but I am posting it here because this is where I was active, and I want to thank the people who were so helpful answering my questions.

My Sweetie has been diagnosed with cancer. Luckily it's treatable and was caught fairly early, but it has made us think a lot about our plans. We have decided that I will move to the UK, so he can stay near his family and we can cut the waiting time to be together. The American immigration process is just too stressful and too long under the circumstances, and even if he got here fairly soon there would be the matter of changing doctors, treatment, and dealing with insurance issues.

I wish everybody here the very best of luck with their visa journeys, and I will miss checking in here every morning to see what's new in the World of the Waiting. If I remember right, Tim is coming home to Bethanie today.....I wish you both all of the happiness you can handle! We'll be okay, and we found out that I can be in the UK well before Christmas with no problem at all. Granted, theirs is a much smaller place, but their system for marriage visas is much simpler and more compassionate. Maybe we'll look at coming here later on, but honestly I think the K-3 and CR-1/IR-1 processes are so cumbersome that it might just be better to stay where we landed together first. Is it fate?

Take care everybody.

I am so sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis of cancer. I think you are making the right decision in going to England, if you are able, rather than coming to the US. You do not need the stress of trying to get immigration paperwork sorted out, as well as trying to get your husband insurance to cover this pre-existing condition as well as sorting out doctor's, hospitals, etc all far away from his family and familiarity. It's hard enough as it is. I lived in the UK with my husband and my spouse visa took approximately 2 hours, with work authorization, and most of that time was just waiting time. I was able to go online and choose the convenient date for me to go to the interview (I was already in the UK at the time under a fiance visa). I am under the impression that if you are in the US, you can apply for a UK spouse visa online at your local British consulate and receive your visa the same day if you go in or else a few days later if you mail it in (that's the way the fiance visa worked two years ago when I did it). I loved living in England and adjusted very easily there- if it wasn't for family commitments that were unavoidable, we would still be living there.

Good luck to you and God bless.

See my timeline for all previous dates!

Naturalization:

6/28/09: Mail N-400 to Texas

7/6/09: NOA1

7/24/09: Biometrics

10/08/09: Interview

11/21/09: Receive oath date

01/22/10: Oath Date

With thanks to all the helpful people who made this journey slightly more bearable.

So sorry to here about your husbands cancer... I think you are doing the best thing for him... he needs to put all his effort into getting better and the stress of US immigration is bad enough without being ill at the same time...

I wish you both all the best and hope all goes well with his treatment...

Cat, I'm so sorry to hear about your SO's illness. Count your blessings it was caught early on and he can get effective treatment, and that you haven't already spent too much money and time on the American visa. There's no good timing for cancer, but at least it seems like this isn't the very worst.

I know two people who have applied in person at the British Consulate in NYC and walked out with a visa the same day, so the practical part of your change of plans should be virtually painless.

Be strong and be good to yourself as you wait for your move to Britain. I'm sure it's hard to spend even a single day apart from him right now, but it sounds like you'll be together very soon.

Best, best wishes to you both,

Alice

hey Cat, I'm sorry to read your news---my best wishes that everything turns out well. I'm sorry too that we won't get to know you better :)

But, if/when you do decide to return to the US, you'll have a much faster/easier option open to you. Keep an eye on the DCF Guide and the London Consulate's website--you can file from where you live, and it's a much faster process.

Best wishes to you both for a speedy recovery and splendid life together (plus you have access to all those cheap Euro holidays, lucky!)
