ATHERTON, Calif. – A California school teacher was placed on paid administrative leave after he rattled a table to get the attention of his math students, startling an eighth-grade girl who used her cell phone to call police.

Atherton police Sgt. Tim Lynch tells the Palo Alto Daily News that officers went to Selby Lane School Tuesday afternoon because of reports a teacher was causing a disturbance.

Officers found a calm teacher with class in session.

The sergeant says the teacher's table-rattling startled a student and she used her cell phone to call 911. He says other students in the class weren't bothered by the teacher's actions.

Redwood City School District deputy superintendent John Baker says the teacher was placed on leave because there was a police response.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

If I was her parent, I'd go in her room when she was sleeping every hour, on the hour and shake her bed and then walk out.

Stupidity has no bounds it seems in some kids these days...

LOL...the parents are probably afraid the kids going to 911 their #######.

this doesn't even make any sense. if no one else was bothered then why was the teacher put on leave? just because there was a police response?

I wonder how many DV's this kids future husband racks up just by looking at her wrong ?

There seems to be a trend of lack of thinking on the part of administrators at schools (think of the weird zero tolerance problems that have arisen in the last few years). They follow policy no matter how irrational it might be which I guess is the safe thing to do in terms of lawsuits.

Maybe she has a medical condition that is triggered by the noise of a rattling table - what sounded like a table rattle to others may have sounded like the earth splitting in half to her.

Or maybe she's just spoiled rotten.

it must be something like the zero tolerence thing. it just seems so silly if no one else was bothered by it. I guess it is just as silly as someone getting expelled for bringing a knife in their lunchbox to cut their food.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.
