I am sad to say that I think America has to be the slowest country ever. OMG your DDS system stinks and is so slow. Go to get drivers license and wait 3 friggin hours WTH? And then tell me that the papers I had there are all disposed of so fill out another form sheeeeesssh wait another 25 mins, then I do the pc test so easy I then wait another 45 mins for someone to finalise things. Other people were coming in for the pc test left us all waiting there OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the pc's are all lined up with no dividers between them. OMG  Then I can't do the road test cause I don't have the insurance papers on me WTH?????????????? The car is insured and registered what does that have to do with anything. We don't do this in Australia and we are a small island lol The systems here are so old and really need updating well they are here in Augusta. They so need to catch up with the bigger cities . What a ####### day sitting waiting for ####### all. Now I have to go back tomorrow for the road test and I have been driving 36 years oh Lord and been driving here the last 6 months and have driven since I got here in 2009. Crazy is all I can say crazy.:bonk::bonk::bonk:

 You hit on one of many topics Americans love to gripe about, and that's the DMV.

here in NY State it use to be a lot worse, fortunately many things have been moved on line like renewals. The local office use to have you wait in two lines, one to have paper work looked at, and then another to pay the fees, this has been improved abit with a waiting area to sit in, with numbers called, and the person doing the paperwork now also takes the payments.

Now you want to see worse, try visiting a bank in China.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

While I agree with most of your 'rant' I would have to disagree with this part.

Most states require that you have proof of registration & insurance on hand when you are driving and you can be ticketed if pulled over and unable to produce it. Why wouldn't someone taking the test be required to comply with ALL 'Rules of the Road" including proof of insurance & registration. In Illinois they even confirm that all fo your lights (including turn signals) are working properly before the tester will get into the car.

In Iowa we need to prove the car is road-worthy as well. Working horn and turns signals and break lights etc.. which is pretty funny 'cause for some reason both of Tony's vehicles don't have working horns... which I never realised until I needed to :P So now my truck is fine but because of the huge tyres Tony needs to bang something out in the tyre wells 'cause it makes this grinding sound when I turn left that I think will scare the pants off the tester... that's why I haven't done the driving portion yet... it's been too cold for Tony to get under there and fix it

Yes Bob my husband and I had this discussion last night about the rego and insurance papers being federal law. Just we don't have this back in OZ. If you have an accident in OZ each driver gives details of insurance companies at accident and then you go home or you get towed and then the insurance company is rung and the details go from there. When you are puled over in OZ the police want your licenses and rego and that's it. I did the road test today and the tester did exactly that checked lights blinkers and horn. The same is done in OZ as well. You can't have a road test even if 1 break light is out. My main gripe was the waiting just crazy and the old system of doing things here. And even today I went for the road test had an appointment and all and was still kept waiting 20 mins. Not impressed is all. But I have it now and one more thing off the check list. Now to get the bloody GC. lol

As the other poster said, "Complaining about the DMV is a very American thing to do!"

FWIW, the Proof of Insurance requirement is a State Law. Driving privileges are not governed by the Federal Government.

Eh, DMV, I have been there twice in 44 years. Once to get drivers license and once to change name. Long waits both times.

YuAndDan: 100% true with Trinidad banks as well! THREE HOURS in line to withdraw money! Another line and TWO HOURS later to get USD converted to TTD! Give me drive-through any day!

Apologies if I state in a comment that my husband and I have been together for years & years. It's just that I can hardly remember a time when he and I were not together.

Ahhhhhhhhhh!!! We are currently in Administrative Processing with no time-lines to guide us!

My husband is looking at cars in Trinidad for me as his wish has come true! Me a Trini-Wife!

BUT

I will call DoS weekly to check the progress and I will not give up hope.

July of 2011 is the cut off date for us, when I will either start construction on a home here in the US or return to Trinidad to be with my husband.

Hey they gave my wife a license to drive so it can't be that hard to do as she is a crazy driver who I am amazed even makes it down the road and back in one piece. But I give them a big pat on the back as it would be me driving her everywhere if they didn't see fit to allow her to pass on her third try.blink.gif

I guess it depends on what part of the US you are, and what specific DMV office you visit. I'm in Chicago and when I got my license it was overall a good experience, line was moving fast enough and had no problems. They didn't accept my license from my country so I had to take both the road test and the written test which was no big deal.

All I can say is Thank the Lawyers for all this paperwork you complain about...These practices are all based on experiences from getting burned by a lawyer so now COPS and DMV require it
