If you wanted to fly internally in Vietnam, which airline is better : Vietnam Airlines or Jetstar? Jetstar is cheaper, but I've read horrible things about them on travel forums. While Vietnam Airlines does have its share of problems, it seems better than Jetstar. Comments?

I've had a semi-bad experience with Vietnam Airlines, but can't say much about jetstar since I havn't gone. I was bout 5 mins late for check-in and they resold my seat to standby passengers. Since I had economy tickets, I had to upgrade to full price tickets and a penalty for changing my flight. It was on a Friday with lots of standbys' waiting to fly to Saigon. It pisses me off that they didn't give me much of a chance or hope that I would be arriving late, the plane doesn't even take off on time. I still fly with Vietnam, since they have so many convenient travel agents around.

I have flown both several times and have a former student who pilots for VAL. When it comes to quality and reliability and flexibility.. VAL wins hands down.. Jetstar however has some awesome sales from time to time. We flew to Singapore 3 people RT less than 100 USD. Jetstart will delay flights for any reason and unless you buy the top of the 3 tiers of flights options it isnt easy to change flights if at all... VAL always has been straight up when it comes to changes and has never charged us extra for that.....

Mark just told me last night about Mekong Air and I have yet to fly with them but he said he was very impressed.

So when it comes to flying in VN it boils down to how tight the schedule is and if $$ is an issue..

You get what you pay for.. The ticket was probably much cheaper than a VAL ticket

I flew with VAL from BKK to HCMC and the only problem was the service. the flight attendants on that particular flight was very rude and arrogant. With Jetstar I flew from HCMC to Hanoi. The flight attendants were very friendly, however the only setback was that the flight was about 1 hr late. what sold me was that Jetstar was cheaper and that they had a shuttle from Noi Bai airport in Hanoi to take us into town.

Mekong Air was very professional and on time. The only problems were:

1.) When we landed in Hanoi the shuttle driver started to pull away to fast and half the people almost fell.

and

2.) They didn't have ice or orange juice on the return flight.

Minor infractions considering the locale. The ticket was $226 R/T during Tet.
