Indeed a very complicated thing.

I do find your comment

interesting.

Because if America is a failed experiment in establishing human liberty as something contrary to human nature, then it should be a foregone conclusion that resisting such change is not only impossible, but foolish. Not to mention asserting it at this point, particularly in this case of a clear history and consequence of racial inequality, with denial and mis-characterizations rife throughout. It seems your attempt at channeling Nietzsche in terms of human necessities as fact has once again shown that this is not indeed fact, but opinion.

My opinion tells me that is not the case. The American experiment is still very much alive, and equal opportunity is morphing on the nation's road to true post-racial status. We are not there yet, IMO, because both extremes overreach their logic to claim as much attention before being silenced by a much more tolerant majority.

Once we get over our denial of history, of consequence, and that a modern civilized society needs a structure to operate in fact and practice as it is written to do so on paper, we'll be better off.

You're asking for the impossible.

Actually there is one way to achieve such an idea of prosperity, but it's not one that's logical/realistic/wanted by anyone who has any ounce of 'humanity' as they say.

I am referring to much more than just 'race' when it comes to America being a failed experiment. We ceased being "The United States" a long time ago eventhough the moniker is still there today. That would be going Off-topic in this thread though, so I'll leave that part at that.

Attitudes have changed. And will continue to do so. We will never reach perfection, and not all of those that hate, or confuse help with hate (start with h, 4 letters), will go away. So why be cynical? Its silly.

This is my view on the current condition of the Black community. I hope it doesn't come across as racist. Currently, the black community defeats itself. The reason black children lag behind is because of the black community as a whole with their cyclical social situations. How did this come to be? From what I have read the black community had strong leadership coming out of world war 2. There was industry for them to work in. But the combination of a changing economy, outright racism in the community, and the targeted killing of black leaders demanding equality in the 50s, 60s, and 70s have left an entire group fairly leaderless and jobless with men heavily involved in crime and women left to raise the children - all within a broken violent environment that breeds further criminals.

So is the US heavily racist today? I don't think so. But you have to understand that the black kid in X neighborhood killing another black kid and becoming a convicted felon is a result of the racist policies and attitudes of the last century. Until this cycle is broken, I think a black history month is needed....

Woa I felt like going for a swig of alcohol every time you wrote 'black community.'

No, I don't think I'd feel like you're making any racist comments, Sousuke. In fact, reading into them I think you are touching on very real consequences of what happens when some people throw stones and hide their hands afterward, and that is what has transpired from those years til the current times. Lucky for us, many of those people and people like them, are less and less every year.

Why would this come across as racist? It's not.

What a lot of people don't recognize (or perhaps do and don't like it) is that affirmative action has done a lot towards the emergence of a black suburban middle class. My census tract, for example, is about one-fourth black. Median incomes are in the six figures. Mostly a white collar community with nice cars and good jobs. Sure, it's true that a lot of the black people with these jobs got it in part due to affirmative action. But these black people are now black people who don't live in the hood. They're raising kids in the suburbs and they're not growing up in the hood either. A cycle has been broken and these kids will be better off for it.

Damn! I missed Black History Month again. I will pay more attention next year. I promise.

I think the Democrats have yet to come to terms with historical segregation, something the GOP has not had to deal with. After all, rich white folk don't mind having rich black folks in the neighborhood, or access to the less affluent to exploit their labor. The modern Democratic left, however, has been always been big on projects to improve the life of minorities, in minority neighborhoods, and in effect, institutionalize poverty by the creation of permanent ghettos.

Affirmative action, something the left is very much supportive of, has been key in the emergence of a black middle class in the suburbs.

Depends how it is applied. Too often, affirmative action means carve outs for affluent minority businesses. If you look who gets the contracts, it is always the same firms. Same thing with education, the affluent minorities get the slots at the better schools. If the recruitment is means tested, and broad based, then no problem, even for the right.

You're right about the affluent black kids getting AA just like their parents did. But their parents weren't affluent. And if they were, their parents weren't. AA has broken the cycle for many black families and that is simply undeniable.

True. The question is whether or not it would have happened with help. Things didn't start getting weird everywhere until Wilson segregated the Navy. At that point, apartheid became US policy, and the Dems have been backtracking ever since.
