I will be travelling to the US at the end of the month and would like to get myself a Illinois state driving licence as soon as I get there. Can somebody please tell me if my old social security card be acceptable, (VALID ONLY WITH INS APPROVAL) or will I need to wait until I receive my new one to arrive in the mail?

Thanks in advance.

Have a green card? Without it you won't be getting the DL. Also don't forget proof of address (lease, bank account statement...).

Edit: If you have immigrant visa with I-551 stamp you should be fine.

Profile says IR-1/CR-1, if this is the case you will have immediate green-card status upon entry to the USA

A SSN is a SSN it wont change, and the Valid with INS notation will be satisfied by the I-551 green-card notation on your CR-1/IR-1 visa in your passport.

Some state's DMV will accept the I-551 notation and SSN card for application for a DL or Learners permit. If not then may have to wait for an actual green-card to arrive in the mail before applying for DL

A few weeks after arival you can visit SSA and apply for a new card without the notation, the number will remain the same.

i did not have my green card or my ssn when i got my d/l in chicago....all i did was bring two pieces of mail with my illinois address on it and my cdn passport showing i came in on a k1 visa. also depending on where you go you might have to pay cash..they did not take visa when i was there, and i just had to take a written test which was about 15 questions..it was really easy actually.

You do not need the actual GC, all they ask for is the SS card and two pieces of mail with your address. I got my DL when I had just gotten to Chicago, I only had 1 piece of mail so they had my husband sign an affidavit stating the address was correct and that's where we lived.
