Thanks guys!

Yoda: Sure thing job in OR prior to moving, I totally I agree. I read somewhere that jobs there are not that easy to find. Hey, goodluck on your business venture in the Phils. What kind of business are you going into? Can you hire me? I'd be happy to jump to a plane to head back to Manila anytime. LOL.

JustBob and Tahoma: Actually I really don't mind the rain it's just that after spending 35 years in the Philippines, a little less of it would be nice. But when winter comes in IL, give me rain anytime!

me and my hubby love it here... got good friends in coosbay, or and they themselves are trying to convince us to move here.... were still weighing that due to the weather....kinda gloomy most of the time... we ask our selves, can we live in that kind of weather everyday?.... but then we contemplate- its about getting used to it. There's always the adjustment period anyway. :innocent: ... if not with the 5 hrs drive- we could be heading to them every weekend.

will see in the future... :star:

btw, love the fresh cheap fish here. Next visit, we will bring big cooler and fill it up with seafood .... :P

If you want a city life, go for Portland, but I just don't like the hassle to find parking space all the time, but most people just use the Trimet to commute, more opportunity for work, but little bit high on cost of living, but WORK though they pay higher than in my SALEM where I live

suburbs most likely, sojen. why? Chantel explained it perfectly, lower cost of living but hopefully close to the city where opportunity for work is brighter. :)

Will it be in Salem or Portland? I've never been to Salem but in Portland. It's really a nice city but I find it a lil bit expensive for a small city. You can finish your tour around the city in a day by foot. Spring and summer is the best because there are lots of outdoor things to do and the weather is perfect. Not too hot during the day and not too cold at night. There are also foodcarts if you don't want to eat in a restaurant. It's so easy to get around even if you don't have a car because they have a good system of transportation. You can ride the train and trolley (smaller than the train) around downtown for free. They have a thing called free rail zone. some people just park their car on the eastside of the river and take the train to downtown (westside of the river which is the heart of downtown) for free. It is also known as a bike friendly city, which is good if you are near the portland metro area because of the traffic. Yes, income tax is high but no sales tax which I think is fair because they will based your tax on your income so the bigger income you have the bigger tax you will pay and same goes with if you a don't earn that much then not much tax they will get from you. While in sales tax everyone will pay the same sales tax no matter how much you earn, so the low income people will pay the same amount of tax with the high income people. But the not so good part about it is Oregon has a high unemployment rate so the state doesn't have much income. One thing I observe is that there are lots of hippies, people with tattoos, having colored hair like blue, fire red and pink and tons of peircings. They like to wear plaids too. There is also a farmer's market where you can get fresh fruits and veggies from the locals. It's only on summer though.

It rains a lot in the fall and winter but the thing is ,it is a bit warm when it's raining and so cold when it's sunny. I often hear the word vegan and organic, lol

Try Washington County just West of Portland. I live in Cornelius, between Forest Grove and Hillsboro. I have lived in the area most of my life and love it. Ya, it rains a lot. I don't like that part. But it is close to the beach, the forest, Mt. Hood, Portland, Washington State, many rivers, some lakes, and much more. I'm an outdoors person and love Oregon for that. I like to fish, hike, ride motorcycles on forest trails, go 4 wheeling, walk on the beach, ski in the snow, hunt, and many other things. I would choose Southern Oregon if I could, because of the better weather, but the jobs aren't as many there. I have a good job here and have no plans of leaving any time soon, unless it was to the philippines. I hope my fiancee will like it here too.

Vegan and organic...not good to someone who has lived with rice as staple food...

Thanks sojen and james, very helpful inputs. if i have it my way, i'd live in the city but there's obviously a lot of things to consider. the balance between the congestion of the city and the fresh air of the woods sounds good though, really something to look forward to. i've been reading on how the job market is by looking into job search engines and indeed most of them are in the city obviously.

as long as your fiancee's with you, i'm sure she'll be fine anywhere. i bet she'll enjoy OR as much as you do because of the beach. Filipinos enjoy the beach, i'm sure you know that. :)

Sorry out of topic.

I'm a firm believer of organic products, we eat organic foods such as meat like chicken, beef and pork, veggies, fruits and breads that are labeled organics, vegan is something I can't do but my in laws are because of health reasons and the same with me, I have allergies and break outs on my face often on 2 years I got here but got it resolved with my doctor since we found out that I am allergic to antibiotics of all the foods they added in the store, anyway I eat healthy and I am so much feeling better, never had any single colds or anything since then, organic foods simply means they don't have chemicals added in it on the process of growing them, natural growth. And yeah you can found organic foods all over the store in Oregon.

Anyway to the OP if you have any questions you can PM me I am glad to help in anything I can

I hope you're right. I will do my best to make my fiancee happy here.

As for the beach, it's not the same here as in the Philippines. Walks are great, but swimming, what a shock she is going to have. The pain in her feet might go away after 10 minutes from the bitter cold, but not even a wetsuit will keep the rest of her warm. I guess that's what I'm for.

Being a OSU Alumnus, I do miss some things about Oregon. The beer is what I miss the most, so much microbrews and other type of beers are available, which is good to drink when it rains. Also going to OSU games and even Duck games is fun too. If one can a good job then Portland, Salem, Corvallis or Eugene are nice places to live. Also look into bend as well. Of course for a Filipina, Hawaii is the best, but Oregon is close second. I say that coz the people are nice and open minded in the cities, and the Asian markers are good.

It's alright, you can still enjoy your rice if you want. If you want to live where there are still lots elbow room and at the same time close to the city you might look at the Washington County (like Hillsboro,Beaverton) as what james and cynthia mentioned. The Milwaukie area and the Lake Oswego area in my opinion is a great place to live too. They are all 20-30 minute drive I think going to the downtown Portland. There are good asian store where you can buy your Filipino food but so far I only knew 3 filipino restaurant. You can always drive in Tukwila, WA for 2.5 hours if you want to eat at Jollibee, Goldilocks and Chowking. Alright I think I talked too much, time to shut up.....

Goodluck!!
