The LA Times has a great crime mapper so you can see where types of crimes have been committed in certain areas during a certain time frame. The husband and I are settling in Los Feliz and from all accounts it seems to be a very safe area, along with Silverlake and Echo Park.

LOL @ Silverlake being 'safe'. It's an ecclectic neighborhood and you'd be surprised at what goes down there. If you want real crime data, not dated info, actually call the local police department, they will give you the information. Furthermore, police departments have 'crime prevention' teams. If you talk to them, they can give you a much better evaluation of neighborhoods.

I'm moving to a place called EL Segundo, they film a lot of movies in this area. I've asked around and this honestly seems to be one of the safest places. This is where my fiance lives.

I think the bigger question to ask is - where do you plan on working? If you don't have a job yet, I would find some place temporary and then find a place with an easy commute.

For example, I love where I live and would recommend it - but if I had to commute to Burbank every day it would kill me

How do you find a place temporary? I don't have a job yet. :)

It seems that they only rent places for a year.

Does anybody know Covina/ West-Covina? It looks "safe" on the link. :)

I have a very limited budget which makes it kinda hard for me to find a place.

I've lived in the Greater Los Angeles area for longer than I care to remember. Even though I moved to beautiful San Buenaventura (1 hour north) in 2001 when I had a bullet go though my bedroom window a second time and have found heaven on earth since, I drive through Los Angeles frequently and know it quite well.

Los Angeles is really a giant spider of towns that grew together. You definitely want to stay away from the center, meaning downtown, East La, and all the nasty places that have become the breeding grounds of gangs. I also cannot recommend anything east of downtown, along the 10 and the 60 Freeways. So join me on a brief journey, starting in the center of hell, downtown.

First we go up north, which brings us quickly to Glendale. It's a wonderful place to live. On a scale of desirability, ranking from 1 (shithole) to 10 (paradise) I rank it as a 7.

East of Glendale is Pasadena, which has a lovely charme and would rank a notch higher on my scale of desirability, about an 8. West of Glendale is Toluca Lake, where all the movie studios are, a 9, followed by Studio City, an 8.5 to a 9, and North Hollywood, a 7. I lived in Studio City from 1991 'til 2001. Going further west from there it is remaining nice. I especially like the area west of the 405/101 intersection. If you are Jewish, this is where you want to live.

Back to the center of hell, downtown.

If you travel west from there on the 10 Freeway, it will bring you to Santa Monica. That, and Venice, which is west of it (kind of) is the place to live if you are in your 20s, like to surf, and hang out with young people. It's rather crowded and I personally don't like it. Can't really give it proper rating, everything from a 5 to an 8.5, depending on location.

If you go south from there, staying in close proximity to the water, you'll find Manhattan Beach, an 8 and at some point Long Beach. Long Beach is like Santa Monica: from bad to very good. One of my favorite is coming next: Belmont Shore. Fantastic place, yet parking is a ######. If you own half as many cars as I do, you couldn't live there. I still like it a lot! A clear 8.

So what's top of the line?

Beverly Hills, and the Beverly Hills of Beverly Hills, Bel Air. Depending on location from an 8.5 to a 10.

Where you live, depends largely on where you work and what you like to do when you don't work. If you have questions, you can always P.M. me.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

the Covina/ West Covina area is a pretty nice towns but they do have their bad areas.. or you planning on buying a house or renting? San Dimas, La Verne and Glendora are nice towns too..
