One other thing with canned food - When I first started several years ago , I remember buying a few cans of beans and tuna every week. A couple of years after that, I remember throwing away a crapload of dusty old cans of beans and tuna. Bottom line if you're not going to eat beans and tuna, don't buy them.

Nowadays I buy stuff that we use. It helps to minimize waste, and if we ever do have to survive on canned food, it will be easier eating stuff we are somewhat familiar with. I also check a couple of times a year so I can donate stuff we won't use before it gets too close to expiration.

Of course meat would be the more difficult thing to come by.

It pays to be friendly to the neighbors dogs now.

Yes. Rotation is key.

Working for a canned meat factory doesn't hurt either!

not if you're a cannibal :jest:

I honestly believe we'll see some cannibalism. Probably not The Road type stuff, but maybe a little Book of Eli.

The Book of Eli

Its a film. In it there is an old couple who eat people. You don't see them actually eating people but they suffer from Kuru which is a degenerative brain disease that causes shaking.

"Why, in my day, you could buy meat anywhere! Eggs they had, real butter! Fresh lettuce in the stores."

Just though I'd throw in one more movie reference. :D

I thought that was an ingenious addition to the movie. Most folks have no idea what happens once Kuru sets in and it was brilliant of the folks in the movie to check for it as their determination of who was a cannibal and who wasn't.

Is that Waterworld?

One of the lines from Book of Eli that I really thought about long and hard after the movie was, "We used to throw away stuff people kill each other over now."

Can you imagine a packet of wet naps from KFC being currency?

It's not that far from truth now. You should see the turf wars amongst the homeless for the various trashcans and dumpsters late at night.

A couple weeks ago I was at a pool hall / poker room having a beer in the car with my cousin...Just talking. Went to relieve myself by the dumpster and there was a guy in there. I guess it is called "Trash Diving" and can be very profitable.

We started talking to the guy.

He had a large bag full of goodies and showed us what he got from that "dive" in his trunk (his car was parked next to mine).

He had an Italian leather pair of shoes that he said he'd get $20 for on ebay.

A ton of baby clothes.

An Addidas duffel bag.

He said the best find he got was a pair of platinum earings (wasn't that night). He's saving those for himself and said the price is around $1800 per ounce for platinum.

He said he found Juicy Couture bags (they go for at least $150 a bag) on previous dives.

He works full-time at Costco and just does this on the side. Sells everything on ebay.

The parking lot is shared with a Thrift Store and they apparently have extra items that they throw out each night, all worth good money. Said he got over $100 in scrap metal the previous night....

**So I wouldn't assume that each "Trash Diver" is homeless....He did mention he got a ticket which is a $500 ticket for getting caught a couple weeks back....

Is dumpster diving illegal? And if so, why?

Now thats jacked up, I bet this same city which fined him for taking stuff from the dumpster has spent tens of thousands of dollars on "recycling programs".

We used to have people at the dump taking stuff people were dropping off, they ran these guys off, now it all goes in the ground... and this city I bet has spent hundreds of thousands perhaps millions on "recycling programs".
