I think the novel was better than the film. There were a few gruesome scenes that were left out of the film.

Yeah I prefer the book too (much like the novel of I Am Legend). I found the film a bit boring, mainly because you lose what's going on in the character's heads.

Which I am Legend did you like the best (of the 3 films)

Probably The Omega Man - though they completely changed the ending of the book (as they did with the Will Smith movie). I do like the Vincent Price film as it's more faithful, but it's got those ridiculous zombies in it.

I couldn't finish the Vincent Price version, but I did like Omega Man the best. Its funny too because you can see people walking around at the very beginning, along with red/green lights etc.

It's an adaptation of a Cormac McCarthy novel - knowing what caused the disaster adds nothing to the story. It's about the relationship between the guy and his son.

That's why it was a stupid movie.

They had the chance to really make something out of it.

Define "a bit."

As in eventually. I mean if you're mobile, you can only carry or take with you so much ammo. If you're stationary, you also only have so much room/stockpile funds. Enventually you'll run out unless you can replace it.

I was super disappointed by The Road.

What kind of "incident" would kill all animals and bugs... but not humans?

The one thing I liked about that movie though - the dude with the shotgun was doing just fine!

Have you read, Emergency? It was quite humorous, at times ridiculous, but other times quite interesting. I'd recommend checking it out.

On the Beach, by Nevil Shute is still the best. The book was better that the movie, and the movie was excellent.

I also read The SAS Survival Handbook and another one by the same author. A lot of that stuff I had learned working at the park because we sometimes did night hiking, etc and had issue with potentially finding ourselves in a jam.

I want to read The Urban Survival Guide by David Morris. That looks fun. I know after Emergency, I took my dad's handcuffs and sat patiently picking the locks until I had it.. then cuffed myself and tried over and over... then tried hands behind the back... LOL. It was fun.

Most people on farms would survive. Most livestock operations have a year or two supplies on hand at any given time. The ones that raise grains could have tens of thousand of bu. stored. They have the knowledge to survive for a long period of time. The hunger would be in the cities...perhaps living a slow death.

That's true. Also why I don't have but a few thousand rounds. It makes no sense to have a mountain of ammo if you have to move. You can't possibly move it all in a crisis. But, that's why I use the most common calibers. I'm guessing there'll be some 5.56, .45 and 12ga. around for trade for quite a while after whatever goes down goes down.

And for the record.... you can carry an @$$load of 5.56 in a rucksack!

Nope. I'll check into it though.

I just carry a handcuff key.

I don't expect to be handcuffed after the collapse since not many folks have them, they're expensive, etc. I'd be more worried about being ziptied or hogtied or some other form of restriction.

The hunger would be in the cities...perhaps living a slow death.

Or perhaps moving to the farms.

I think farmers are pretty knowledgeable of their worth post-collapse. I'm guessing doing security for them wouldn't be a bad gig since hungry zombies are more than likely to pass through.

Ammo is heavy though. For someone of my size, I would imagine it would be difficult to carry it very far in any large amount. Assuming I had a gun for it, that is. Which I don't. My dad got this case of sold-off Soviet stuff though. I think I mentioned that before. Anyway, it weighs a ton. It's all tinned up though and then in a stackable wooden crate.

I tried practicing the zip tie thing but #######, that hurts. I was reading about self-defense and things, then reading Emergency and thought hmmm, I keep seeing this come up as something they recommend people just know-- on the most practical level in case of abduction. So I tried the method and I imagine I could do it... but it really hurt and I didn't continue because it felt like I was going to cut myself on the ziptie. (Surprisingly my reason for stopping wasn't because I felt like an idiot--curiosity overruled that.) At any rate, i thought knowing some tricks to that is something every person, especially woman, should know in order to be able to figure your way out in an emergency. Even if you never try it, I think it's still better to at least have an idea of what to do as opposed to zero idea. I mean, Gd forbid a Vjer ever was assaulted in such a manner but I don't see how it couldn't hurt to know. Just part of self-defense like knowing to go for the eyes or whatever.

I remember being a kid, a little kid, maybe eight or so and learning that prior to the industrial revolution assisting agriculture with machinery, 95-98% or so of the population was involved in agriculture and only 2-5% being involved in working other jobs. I think now I may take some issues with those stats, but we'll stick with saying 90%. Now, there is about 2% of our population involved in agriculture. We also continually are building over our arable land. That is a mistake. Ammar and I always talk about this re:Egypt. I mean the Aswan dam is a mistake if you look at it from an agricultural standpoint. The floods of the Nile were what made the land fertile. Also, they build like crazy on their land which is able to be farmed and ignore the other parts. It makes more sense to farm that and just live slightly outside that ring. Instead they don't and they've reached a level that is unsustainable. If they let the Nile go and moved their housing and such out, they'd probably be OK.

You'd have no problem carrying an M-4 style AR-15 and a few hundred rounds. The rifle is maybe 6 lbs. (without all the Barbie sh!t on it) and a 30 rd. mag only weighs about a lb. You can carry a few hundred extra rounds in your ruck and you can always drop your ruck if you need to move faster.

I've looked at this from a lot of angles since I don't expect my wife to be carrying anything heavy for any amount of time. She just simply couldn't do it. She'd have no problem carrying a rifle and kit (M-4 with 120rds., 1qt. water, poncho, meal, multitool, etc.) but I'd put her carrying a 25lb. load at maybe an hour or two, tops. So.... because of that.... it's M-4 for the "rainy days" and a .22LR for the day-to-day work around the homestead.

As a matter of fact, I think most of us could get by with a decent .22LR like the Marlin 60 or even a Ruger 10/22. Like most concealed carry encounters of today, the post-apocalyptic "zombie scenario" probably won't be big battles of armies charging at one another. It'll be bands of hungry people armed with clubs, tire irons, etc. and looking for food. You won't have to shoot them all.... just one. "Lets go attack that other house."

My dad got this case of sold-off Soviet stuff though. I think I mentioned that before. Anyway, it weighs a ton. It's all tinned up though and then in a stackable wooden crate.

5.56 is about half the weight of 7.62 anything.

Zipties are both surprisingly effective... and easy to defeat. But, like the plastic bag over the head, most people go for the throat when they should just rip out their mouth/nose.

It may come back to bite us in the ####. I know our dependence on technology will. What's funny is many of the people we scoff at today (hillbillies, rednecks, etc.) are going to be very useful after a collapse.

Don't worry, Israel will bomb the dam and life will return to normal along the Nile.

I will have a quart of sipping whiskey in one hand, and my other arm around my wife, sitting on the front porch, waiting for National Guard trucks to take us to the internment camps. I figure I can politic my way with my resume into a position of leadership in no time.
