You are free to break open the garage door without worrying about pesky neighbors calling the goddamn cops.

actually, there's a catch on it that you undo to open the door manually.

It is freedom.

That you don't actually care much for true freedom is another matter altogether.

Fine, I don't care for true freedom. Next. :P

When the economy grows, so does the tax revenue - a pay raise for Uncle Sam. The problem is, whenever Uncle Sam gets a pay raise, he spends even more money, and each year the problem just keeps getting worse.

Without a balanced budget amendment, Uncle Sam cannot be trusted to act in a fiscally disciplined manner.

Exactly. The way it's going now even if the tax rate went to 100% the government would spend 150%.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

There's got to be a way to explain it even to the dumbest fucktards to make them understand what the future holds and vote the Republican-Democrat regimers out of office.

I take it back to first grade. "If you have no food to eat or water to drink and there's no power or heat in your house, what are you going to do? You're going to ask mommy and daddy, right? Well, what if mommy and daddy have no money?"

That's what's going on now. The govt. (aka mommy and daddy) have no more money to buy food and water, pay the rent or provide power, heat, etc.

WHY ARE YOU STILL RELYING ON MOMMY AND DADDY???

what have you done & are you doing to financially prepare? are you staying here or moving abroad?

I've considered moving abroad. There are much better locations than the midwest to survive the end of the world. I'm thinking somewhere near the ocean would be pretty good.

The amount of ammunition I have on hand or can make with components on hand can only be measured in tons.

If you have a good location, that makes sense. But, if it's in your basement or garage in the middle of town... not so much.

It's reasonable to believe the small towns in VT. will maintain some semblance of law and order and society will function much as it has for years. However, when the waves of zombies from Montreal, Portland, Boston, Albany and Syracuse come marauding through, you better make sure you have tons of townsfolk manning those tons of guns.

Call me stupid but I don't think the "next collapse" is gonna be as a lot of you guys make it out. Recessions happen in every healthy economy.

Buying canned goods and making sure you have weapons! This sounds very retarded to me.

Sounds like some people have been watching a little too much Glenn Beck.

I honestly hope you're right. Historically, you are. Almost every civlized country that's had a "collapse" in modern times has maintained life as they knew it in one form or another. We probably will too.

But... that big ol' what if is always out there. What if our vehicle-based, credit-dependent, non-self-sufficient society is suddenly faced with no gasoline shipments, no power being delivered to homes, no food being delivered to grocery stores?

If you have a stockpile of canned goods in your basement and a few firearms to protect your home with, dare I say you'll end up OK until society rights itself again. If you don't have those things... well, I hope FEMA makes it to your neighborhood in a timely fashion.

actually, there's a catch on it that you undo to open the door manually.

Yet more evidence of the bigger problem. Most folks don't know that. Many grown men can't change a tire on their car, start a fire, skin a deer or build a simple shelter. Without those primitive skills, they're at the mercy of whomever can.

Well if we don't pay it back then it is a problem for the governments that lent us the money

When Greece almost defaulted on it's debts last year there was concern among economists that it could cause the entire global economy to collapse. The US GDP is 50 times that of Greece.

More and more people have come to realize that the global financial system is just one giant ponzi scheme. All ponzi schemes end the same way. It's an unfortunate example of cognitive dissonance that has allowed us, as a nation, to ignore this fact for as long as we have.

You can thanks the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 and then Bretton Woods for all of it...

There's your wood and kindling... All they needed was the match to light the fire over the years.

You are either the most prepared person I know or the most paranoid. Hopefully, it's just paranoid, but it definitely doesn't hurt to be prepared. You made me start thinking about a lot of stuff.

I too hope I'm just paranoid. I'm the last one that wants to fire shots at someone and go days and weeks without eating a hot meal or taking a hot shower. But I can almost guarantee you it's not a question of IF it's going to happen, but WHEN it's going to happen.

The die is cast. As evidenced by all the posters above who are talking about why and how it happened - instead of what they're doing to prepare for it - it really is going to happen. It's spiraling out of control and the sad part is the longer we go before it happens, the worse it's going to be. Society is degrading at a faster and faster rate as the years go on.

Like I said, I hope it never happens. But, as a rational person, I see it happening sometime in my life. Also as a rational person I'm taking steps necessary to protect myself for when it does happen. I have nowhere near the budget or lifestyle necessary to be 100% prepared but there are small steps we can all take to be set up better when the rainy day comes.

The US Govt. recommends having emergency supplies on hand for natural disaster and/or civil emergency. At minimum you should have 72hrs. worth of food, water and heat (fireplace, portable heater, candles, etc.) in your house. If possible, you should have a week or two and if you're really prepared, three weeks should be enough to get you by in a large situation (massive earthquake) and share with friends/family in a smaller one (tornado).

Those who've given preparedness a lot of thought will have secured a location with a good water supply (or two) arable land for food and/or wild game and networked with plenty of friends who possess the means to defend their assets against outsiders.

Most of us have the means to be somewhere in the middle of those two levels. Most of us can't own acres of land out in the wilderness "just in case" but we can keep a stash of canned goods, a bag or two of rice and a portable burner or two on hand. You're probably already closer than you think! How many folks have a 20gal. propane tank out by the grill? Keep an extra tank or two and your set for meals for several weeks or warmth from your burner for several days. Add some canned goods and bottles of water and you're reasonably prepared for a natural disaster with no power for a while. Add a shotgun to that mix and your family is safe for a short time. Add a few friends and neighbors to that mix and your whole community is safe.

Baby steps. Keep a small backpack with food, water, a good knife and comfortable walking shoes in your car in case you're stranded somewhere and need to hoof it back home. Keep those 72hr. supplies in your house. In getting prepared for the little things, you'll start to see the necessity of preparing for the bigger things. You'll also realize how much better off you are now than you were before. - Even if you are just paranoid!

You'd better hope that when the ###### hits the fan you're under 50 and healthy too, unless you're stocking up on medicines; taking a medical degree and have a young buck to do all the running for you ;)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Here's a question.

What "obligation" do you think those who did prepare, have to share the goods with others who didn't?

neighbors, in laws, co-workers, friends?

It will be the Wild Wild West all over again so if us non-prepared people have bigger guns we will rob you for your 2 week supply of canned beans.

-When I used the term "Those who have prepared", I included suitable firepower.

-Unless you have something really, really big, a larger caliber will fail against superior tactics nearly every time.

*Bring it!
