If you already have an SSN, all you need in addition to that is the EAD to start working - and a job, of course You won't be issued a new SS number. The one you have is your number for life. In my case, for example, my SSN card states "Valid for work only with DHS authorization", because I was issued an SSN number for on-campus employment while I was an F1-student.

From what I've read on VJ, many people have problems with the USCIS site in terms of checking their case status. My receipt numbers have worked since day one, but some people haven't been able to check their status at all during their entire process. It doesn't mean there is anything wrong with your AOS papers or your case in general, it's a problem with the web site system. I know it must be annoying, but won't let it worry you too much. You can always try to call the USCIS customer service number and ask about it, but I doubt they will be able to do much about it.

if you already got your EAD in the mail, go ahead, apply for SSN at your local SSA Office, then you can use that SSN for the tax, driver's license, work, etc. Since EAD is the card you'll show while your AOS is pending so you can work already.

Like what Myopia said, she, too is waiting to be able to apply for SSN, I, myself is on the same spot as well. We have a tax agent, doing our tax paperworks, he went ahead filed for my ITIN, but once I have a SSN, I can call him right away so that he can file the tax papers in a normal way, since my hubby and i did it as a joint tax return.

Well, thank you. Nope I don't have my EAD yet, still waiting for Biometrics letter... Anyways, in getting the SSN, on the day that you apply for it, will you be able to get it right away? I mean, the SSN, and if there's such a thing as a SSN card, in how many days will you get it? Thanks.

You don't get the SSN card right away, if I remember correctly it takes between 2-3 weeks for it to arrive. You do get a receipt that proves that you have applied for an SSN number when you go to the SS administration office to apply for a number. This receipt was enough for me to begin working when I first applied for my number, but that was because I was working for my university's international services office and they knew exactly how the process goes - I don't think other employers would accept that receipt as proof. They need the actual number. Your SSN number is issued pretty soon after you have applied for it, probably within a few days. You can go back to the office in a week of applying for an SSN number, and ask them to give you a printed receipt that shows the actual number itself, though you don't have the card yet. Your employer doesn't need the card - they need your SSN number for salary and tax purposes. So, you just need to KNOW the number before you start working.

Thank you Mrs. Finland. Hubby's SS card says something similar as yours. It's so aggravating not to be able to check online for touches. I guess we can just fall back on the text notifications that we sent along with our AOS package. That's better than nothing at all.

We are planning to do our walk in biometrics on Thursday morning since the ASC is closed on Wednesdays.

I talked to my friend last night, he filed at the beginning of February 2010, late March he receives his EAD, and his interview was scheduled to June 23rd 2010.

oh yea he lives in Queens, NYC.

so man i don't get it why for some people it takes longer...so hopefully for us, we should get it by late July......

From what I heard, some NY filers has faster process. But as what USCIS and attys said, everbody has a different timelines coz USCIS receives thousand and thousands of applications and hopefully they accomodate our applications well.

I'm hoping they will accommodate all you guys well and keep my file in the bottom of the pile, so that our interview wouldn't be before August!

(...well.. let's say I hope they keep me at the bottom of the pile AFTER I've gotten my EAD/AP card..)

Got my biometrics letter today, but only for i-765, but will definitely ask Oakland ASC to consider biometrics for my i-485 on my early walk-in this coming Friday! :)
