My friend who is also dating an American just told me about a website called www.swap.ca

Have any of you looked into it or know anything about it? Is it worth my time or efforts?

Seems like an expensive option. Canadians can go visit for a certain number of days without a visa.

No did you go to the link? its a work program for students and non-students to travel the world and work in places for certain periods of time.

The requirement to go to the USA with this Swap program is you have to be a secondary student tho to use it.

The eligibility requirements state:

Eligibility: Full-time post-secondary students in 2011. Minimum age 18, part-time or high school students not eligible

Visa Duration: Any 4-month period between May 1 – Oct. 1, 2011...could work out if you get to choose your location - still just 4 months and then you're back home.

I know you've had a few posts looking for a way down to the US....but the advice given about K1 and CR1 was solid. There are no VISAs that you can get to allow you guys to 'try it out' and live together. It's just not how immigration works. You could of course apply to a university and go to school in the states as a student VISA (don't think you're eligible to work though)

Work VISAs are hard to come by (as someone noted in your other post 'Just Starting')...H1's are done or all but alloted and a TN VISA is for a highly skilled worker in very specific occupations....unless you're a rocket scientist or nurse...you're not eligible.

Has your BF considered moving north - closer to the border I mean....if he lived in NY state somewhere, you guys could visit often, potentially every weekend even.

The Swap program is actually a lot more complicated and expensive than it looks. I knew someone who did it and they didn't speak very highly of it.

You do need to actually find an internship first and then they basically help to get you the VISA, but its not guaranteed and quite expensive. Basically you can you do it yourself once you find the internship, it just eliminates the employer having to deal with the visa situation. Finding a US employer to hire you an an intern would probably be difficult in this economy still, depending on your industry.

Thanks for all the replies. We have discussed him moving up north to make it easier, however at this point he may be getting a great job! It would be way more money, great benefits, amazing insurance, good hours. If he does get this job I would never want him to leave it. This is all so new and confusing for me I'm sure I will have 100 more questions. I've read a lot online, the problem is figuring out what is right what is wrong and making sense of it all.
