need help fellow vj's. i bought a globe kababayan simcard in the philippines and im not sure if what kind of cellphone do i need to buy here in the US. they told me just buy any unlocked cellphone but my prob is there are diff kind of unlocked cellphone which is confusing me. i dont know about the gsm, quadband and triband. any suggestion which kind do i need to buy? pls help

a basic gsm cellfone would do.. it just would work so long as the mobile phone has a simcard slot

Actually, any open line cellphones will do. ANY! The problem is if you have globeline network coverage in your area. My friend in California is using that sim (roaming) but, here in Orlando FL, no coverage so far. I bought globe and smart sim before with 500 load...GONE! No Coverage. Check in your area if you have the coverage first. Hoping this help.

GSM is a type of radio a cell phone uses. like at&t phones uses GSM radios on their phones. dual/tri/quad-bands are the networks in which the cell phone can operate in. as long as you have a sim unlocked cell phone, your globe sim will work (again depending if you get signal. you have to look at the cell phone carriers in your area and see how good their coverage are in their area. since the sim is activated for roaming, it will use the cell towers in your area and hop onto that provider for the roaming service.

Quadband gsm unlocked , is the way to go.

I picked up a used nokia E71, which is great for travel and at home , for about $130, but you can go much cheaper.

Most of these are unlocked, some are for tmobile 3g bands, but I think the ATT 3g bands work properly in the philippines (if you need to use 3g data while overseas)

FWIW, when my wife sent me the roaming sim while I was in kuwait, it wasnt set to roaming. I think it was because she tested it before sending it to me. Not 100% sure that was the case, but your friend may need to have someone talk to globe or smart. My wife had to go to smart and give them the 16 digit number that is associated with the SIM card. it's worth a try. Our roaming sim connects saying Cingular...we dont have Cingular up here in Alaska.
