I realise it's different depending on where you apply, but roughly how long does it take these days from when you send in your N-400 etc to getting your naturalisation cert, and how long from then until you can vote (I believe you need to register to vote a certain amount of time before an election?)?

The reason I am asking is that I am eligible to apply for US citizenship this July (90 days prior to 13th October 2011), but not sure we'll have the money for fees at that time. I definitely want to vote in the primaries and the Presidential elections in 2012 though, so how far before that should I apply to be reasonably certain I can vote?

roughly 5 to 6 months, depending on the city and state. do it as soon as you can and then register to vote, you'll be fine.

you don't need a passport to vote, only a driver's licence or state ID and a local address. I don't have a passport.

As you can see in the timeline in my signature it will be about 5 months for Linh from sending package to oath ceremony (next week).

Arkansas primary is May 22, 2012. So you have some time.

Was six days short of three months from the time we sent in the N-400 and my stepdaughter received her interview, until we received that letter that a decision cannot be made.

Three of us could fly down to Venezuela, think $30,000 should handle that, each of us is limited to $10,000 cash each, go into a Venezuelan Court with that money can get any kind of piece of paper I want, but stating there are no battery nor assault charges against her when she was 1 and 4 years old. Then fly to St. Paul and drop that off. That should expedite things.

But already felt I gave their courts enough money trying to get public documents from them so I could bring my wife and her daughter here that were spell checked. Could call that an expedient fee, both the USCIS and DOS offers that, without that expedient fee, would have taken them years. But part of their expense was hiring a person that knew how to read, write, and type correctly.

But in this country, suppose to be dealing with an intelligent and corrupt free government, so I don't know how long it will take. Kind of questioning the intelligence.

You can never be sure that your application won't take longer than the average one. The primaries start on January 16 (Arkansas May 22), and you'll need to calculate-in a 6-month processing time for your N-400. Most likely it will be only 4 to 5 months, but you never know.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Yes as others have said the national goal for USCIS to process a case is 5 months, and most offices have been processing them during that timeframe, of course it differs office to office from sending off my application to oath ceremony was only 3 months and 1 day for me at the Philadelphia office. I did early biometrics and believe my case was pretty straight forward (filing based on 5 year). For others espcially if there is any name change involved or if filing based on 3 year marriage, that will complicate the case and thus take longer.
