no, you're not getting it that if you don't buy gas, you don't pay road taxes. ;)

same for water and electricty. the same can't be said about schools - even if you don't have kids or even if you're in your 90's.

What makes me mad is paying taxes for police when Im not getting raped or robbed.

And how about street lights? Fire and police? Emergency services? Libraries? Parks? You're being ignorant you think all of the public services you enjoy at your disposal are pay-as-you-go. And FWIW, gas taxes do NOT pay for the entire costs of roads. Feel free though to prove me wrong.

ETA: Ah, you tricky Chuckster. Even your faulty argument doesn't negate the loose definition of Socialism that Luckytxn uses. Nice dodge though, kemosabe.

well let's see. the street lights here are paid for by the individual homeowner. police is taxpayer funded - i.e. homeowners.. the fire department is volunteer and they hold fund raising breakfasts all the time.

and i have no problem with the roads be supported solely by the gas taxes - might get some of the rifraff off the roads.

What does that have to do with Luckytxn calling everyone he doesn't agree with a Socialist?

what makes me mad is when police are pulling someone over to increase their pension fund when someone is getting raped and/or robbed.

Hmmmm... Let's see,.... democratically elected government, taxes levied on its citizens, services offered to all on an equal basis by this government for the individual and collective benefit of society,... sounds OK.

Wait a minute, Gxd-d@mn it, not so fast!! That is SOCIALISM!!! Gotta get rid of it all because we all know 'socialism' is an EVIL thing to be avoided at all costs!! And I know socialism is evil cause Rush, Glenn and Sarah all say so!!!

Maybe you don't realize it but 'volunteer' fire departments are still funded by taxpayer dollars. Who do you think pays for all the equipment and training? And some (most?) VFD's pay the 'volunteers' for their time actually responding to calls. There have, in the past, been subscriber funded fire departments. Most of us are horrified to see a fire department stand idly by while someone's home burns. Same thing in health care, it is considered immoral and unethical to refuse needed care to someone based on their ability to pay.

So, since our morality and ethics call for the service to be provided, shouldn't we, as a society, enact a fair way of paying those who provide those services? Yeah, I agree, that is socialism! Get over it! Whether you realized it before or not, our society has long been very socialist with an economic system being a blend of capitalism and socialism.

i'm aware of that. however, for the same price in taxes we in the county don't have the same fire coverage they have in the city. you know, response time and all. same applies with the sheriff. yet we pay for the same rate as the city. nothing wrong with that, eh?

It costs a fair bit more to provide the same level of service in rural areas. So it may be understandable if response times are longer. I doubt most rural residents would be willing to pay what it would cost to get the same quick response times seen in metropolitan areas.

I also live in a rural setting. The advantages, for me, greatly outweigh the disadvantages. I am guessing you feel the same. :)
