I met my foreign spouse while working on the island of Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos Islands. Our company purchased the main water supply plant for the island, and there was an apartment building that came with the deal. She worked at the apartments cleanining the apartments and doing laundry for many of the tenants there. Funny thing that caught my attention.. I was trying to better my Spanish speaking skills and was using Rossetta Stone. Gabriela was cleaning my apartment and ironing my clothes one Saturday while I was studying and asked what I was doing. I replied that I wanted to better my Spanish skills. She asked If it taught me the Spanish alphabet. I replied no. She said; I know your the boss here, and I always thought you were a pretty smart man. I asked what she ment, and she replied that to speak any language, a person must start at the beginning which would be learning the alphabet.. I chuckled to myself because this made since to me. Then in true Dominican fashion she said; " I can teach you more Spanish in a week then you will learn in a month using the computer". I responded really? She went on to make a deal... One hour a day for a week, and if you don't learn more Spanish then you have using that computer, you owe me nothing. If you do, you pay me $300.00 for teaching you.. We hagled, and settled on 200. At the end of the week, I paid her because I learned a lot of Spanish. After three weeks of Spanish, we started going out, and the rest is hiistory..
