Letter of Intention to Marry (for K1): Is it Necessary?

I don't see a lot of people mentioning this but in the suggested instructions for a K1 on the VJ site,

it is suggested that after the NOA2 is received, the petitioner should send a letter to the embassy

stating that he/she still intends to marry the fiance(e) and continues to support the K1 visa.

Does anybody actually do this? Is it really necessary? It certainly does not seem required (at least it is not required of the consulate on ho chi minh city, vietnam)

Nevertheless I just wanted to ping some of you to find out if you have actually done this or not.

They suggest that a new letter is written with a date mark closer to the time of interview, but it is not meant to be sent to the embassy, rather it is meant to be taken along to the interview. I myself didnt bother with the second letter of intent to marry and nor was I asked for it.

I had to bring an updated letter of intent signed by Jerry (the USC) with me to the visa interview itself, not sent ahead of time. Perhaps others who went through Ho Chi Minh will pipe up with some info.

I went to visit Claudeth last March and took her a new letter of intent. The embassy took it the day of the interview.

My husband (then fiance) sent me an updated letter of intent as well. It was the same letter but with a date closer to my visa interview. My interviewing officer kept it for the file at the end of the interview.

Both Jon and I did do another letter of intent but they were not asked for at the interview.

For the actual interview, we never had additional letters of intent to marry and they never even asked for one.

At the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá, Colombia and a couple of other Embassy people have been rejected/denied for not having the letter of intent with the newer date. I do not know for the Philippines but I would not take that chance.

Key here.....LONDON usually doesn't want the letter of intent if the NOA-2 has not expired.

Most (but not all) consulates seems to want it.

It goes with the beneficiary to the interview, UNLESS OF COURSE YOUR CONSULATE ASKS FOR IT IN ADVANCE. Always follow the instructions sent to you by your consulate.

Yes, we did this. I sent a new one right before the interview. There are a lot of things that don't seem required of the HCMC consulate that you'll find out later actually are.

You should do anything that you can to make your chances of approval higher...seems that this is a small amount of time to write new Intent Letter that has positive effect on your visa approval chances...so is it REQUIRED by Law? Maybe not really 100%. Is it a SMART MOVE to write a NEW INTENT LETTER? Heck Yes!!!!

It wasn't so long ago, in the overall scheme of things, that the I-129f petition did not require statements of intent from the petitioner and benficiary. The consulates typically did, at least from the petitioner. Some still do, because a fair amount of time can pass between submission of the petition and visa interview and things can change in that time.

Old habits can die hard, and old information can live on after its value has faded.

It's not a bad idea if a lot of time has lapsed between your NOA-2 and your interview.

I gave Ewen one for his interview (4 months after NOA-2), but they didn't ask for it.

All places must be different as Montreal specifically asks for an updated one from the USC.
