We had the same thing in 1998. Our president was stepped down after the protester pushed him to. Now it has been 12 years since he stepped down and the situation still same, we, ordinary people without any power and interest in government thing, can not feel a significant effect. Hundred college students passed away for it for the thing called, that we wanted "changes". It can not be felt much by us but they who sit in government seats.

Hope Egypt will do better.

You mean Mubarak's paid supporters seem to be fond of Molotov cocktails, right? You do realize (although some of your other posts on the subject have been suspect) that the anti-Mubarak protesters have been overwhelmingly peaceful and defensive rather than offensive, right?

The protesters I watched live being interviewed since this began seem to be polite, but angry. Angry at America, and at Americans. Some folks, be it supporters of Mubarak, or those that want to see him removed, have also attacked journalists. I am not about to demonize, or praise, any of the parties at this point. Let's just say I am cautious, as I have noted how similar things have played out in the past.

From a purely VJ point of view I imagine this has had a significant effect on K-1 and K-3 processing for our members with Egyptian SO's. Hang in there those who are effected!

I use South Asian examples because I get the sense that a lot of people in the West lump people who look like that into the same bucket. "Look at them, you think they can be democratic?"

Someone needs to remind people - they have college degrees in large numbers and have the same desires and aspirations most in the West do. They are people, not animals to be subjugated and in need of being civilized.

I'm afraid that the habit in White Western Christian cultures is that many of them (by no means all) see people who are not White Western Christians as inferior and in need of westernizing. That's why so many non-westerners resent their superior attitudes. I recently saw a film called "Rabbit Proof Fence" about the abuse of Aborigines and "half-caste" children in Australia. When I was a young woman, I worked with indigenous rights groups in the US, South America, and Australia to address the types of injustices done to Native peoples, as depicted in this film. The repeated repression of non-Whites by western Christians "for their own good" is a pitiful and repetitious story that is not often truthfully told.

What each minority group has in common is that they were systematically and institutionally oppressed and controlled under the justification that White Christian norms are superior to anything else. There are still people frightened by the idea that anything else might prevail in Egypt or anywhere where non-Christians are the majority. Most will accept nothing less than stamping out the "problem" to facilitate their own interests, even if that means propping up a dictatorship to proxy for them.

That is what so much of this right-wing pessimism and need to try to influence and control the outcome of any situation where the "others" have "gone Native" is all about. It's unnatural to them that entire populations of "those people" can appropriately run their own lives in accordance with their own values. The Right Wingers and the terrorists have much in common, but that almost goes without saying.
