I know, right? I couldn't stop watching yesterday and felt really let down. Now today I had a doctor's appt so didn't get to work till 12 and didn't hear the news until late. I hate when I miss the good stuff! But anyways... :dancing::dancing::dancing:

Yay!

I'm kinda bummed I was glued to the TV all yesterday and then it happened when I was gone today.

In line with that, history shows that America was no democracy after its revolution either. After revolution comes evolution. Change takes time. I don't understand the pessimism either, but, thank God, this is about what Egyptian people want and about the latest dictatorship the west has lost.

I use South Asian examples because I get the sense that a lot of people in the West lump people who look like that into the same bucket. "Look at them, you think they can be democratic?"

Someone needs to remind people - they have college degrees in large numbers and have the same desires and aspirations most in the West do. They are people, not animals to be subjugated and in need of being civilized.

Ok Ok, I'm just waiting to see which column this revolution will end up on. Will it end up on the column with the Haitian Revolution, The American Revolution, the Treaty of Berwick etc. or will it end up on the other column with the French and Iranians (and maybe the Bolsheviks depending on how you view that particular part of history).

Probably along the lines of the EDSA Revolution in the Philippines. And, after some time, there will be some nostalgia for the time of Mubarak, when things seemed more efficient than the current form of government.

Or the Orange Revolution which it resembles and 5 years later all is back to the way it was and the same guy is back in power...with a chip on his shoulder.

You must have missed the composition of the protesting crowd - women were part of the protests. I also remember the story of Christians forming a protecting wall around praying Muslims and vice versa. Not sure why one needs to be so pessimistic about the future of Egypt?

Those were the protesters. But if a hard line Islamic group takes over women and gay rights will suffer. Post all the pictures of the protest you want but it doesn't mean there will be a peaceful government. Don't you want there to be another Democracy in the ME besides Israel?

I hope for the best and plan for the worse. Good luck to the Egyptian people.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Mubarak has stepped down. The people won.

Yet when Americans talk about changing their government, they're seen as RWNs.

We'll eat our words if Obama is still president in 2030. :star:

He may not be president in 2012. "Aww, y'all aint even give dat man a chance."

What gets me is people see something like what happened in Egypt and they scream and cheer about how great it is. When folks here talk about changing things they're nutters.

No No I understand what you are saying. But the US doesn't have the conditions that Egyptians must face. If we slide into 3rd World Territory I'm sure we'll be up in arms. Though take note, so far the Egyptians have done it through will power not firearms or bombs.

Yeah, I didn't give much weight to all the worry warts that were shitting bricks sideways when the Berlin Wall came down fearing a new German empire. Rather than celebrating the liberation of a long oppressed part of the country, they went all negative on the inevitable growing back together of what belonged together in the first place. Turns out that those worry warts had it all twisted. See what I mean?

Had the Egyptian population been armed, as we are, Mubarak would have been gone a long time ago by popular election. The presence of firearms makes the peaceful transition of government MORE likely (as it has changed here several times, twice in the last 5 years) and the need for Revolution much less likely. It prevents the enslavement of people to begin with.

They do seem to be fond of Molotov's, noting the firebombing of the Cairo Museum of Egyptian Antiquities.

You mean Mubarak's paid supporters seem to be fond of Molotov cocktails, right? You do realize (although some of your other posts on the subject have been suspect) that the anti-Mubarak protesters have been overwhelmingly peaceful and defensive rather than offensive, right?
