Congratulations. For the Removal of Conditions start collecting documents. Some of the best documents are those which show you taking an active part in the child's life. In addition to joint accounts and such with your wife, if you are considered the guardian of the child both legally and in practice it is virtually a slam dunk that you have a legitimate relationship.

Make sure you are listed on all school and medical documents for the child as a "parent or guardian" and request that all school documents be sent to "Mr. & Mrs. _________" or both your names if she did not change her name. Also, I was always the one that signed any permission slips, report cards, sports permission, etc. Also I signed anything at the doctor for our sons. I am also on their bank accounts as a joint owner. Make copies of everything you sign for the child.

VERMONT! I Reject Your Reality...and Substitute My Own!

Thank you for the advice Gary and Alla,

I have already started collecting information on my stepson, well now I call him my son (I am very comfortable saying that). I have started collecting the medical information because I have already been signing those forms. I am also going to open a joint checking account with him since he is at the state university because he can use a ATM at the university when needed (will only allow a $50 a month for supplies and meals if he likes). If you think of anything else that will help let me know. You have been a great help through this journey.
